Item 7b Memo

PORT OF SEATTLE
MEMORANDUM

COMMISSION AGENDA STAFF BRIEFING Item No. 7b
Date of Meeting Sept 22, 2009
DATE: September 2, 2009
TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer
FROM: Dave Soike, Deputy Director, Aviation Division
SUBJECT: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Facility Functionality and Readiness

BACKGROUND
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (STIA) has undergone a tremendous change over the last
decade. Many new, large, and very visible facilities were built and are now in operation such as
Concourse A, the Central Terminal, the Third Runway, and the airport entrance/exit expressway
road. In addition, several less visible and less publicly recognizable infrastructure facilities have
been partially rebuilt such as the baggage system, electrical substations, heating and airconditioning
systems, and various other utilities. These underlying utility systems may be less
visible; however, they are critical to the full functionality of a huge facility like STIA that
encompasses 2,500 acres in overall footprint size that includes a 3.1 million square foot terminal
building. In order to fully serve the over 22,000 thousand staff who work on-site and over
75,000 thousand travelers who utilize STIA on average each day, these systems must be
maintained to assure functional readiness.
The purpose of the briefing is to illuminate for the Commission the types of infrastructure and
system improvements that must still be accomplished to ensure facility functionality and
readiness in order to serve STIA's business customers and travelers.
