Item 7a Memo
PORT OF SEATTLE MEMORANDUM COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 7a Date of Meeting January 27, 2009 DATE: January 21, 2009 TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer FROM: Charlie Sheldon, Managing Director, Seaport Division SUBJECT: Resolution No. 3210, Second Reading and Final Passage Naming the new cruise terminal located on Pier 91 Smith Cove Cruise Terminal BACKGROUND Construction is on schedule to open the new cruise passenger terminal located on the southern portion of Pier 91 at Terminal 91(T91). This new cruise facility will occupy approx 10 acres of pier space inclusive of a 143,000 sq ft passenger terminal building and two adjacent 1200 ft long vessel berths on each side of the finger pier both equipped with shoreside power for cruise ships. Opening of this facility adds yet another new business activity to the continued growing diverse mix of businesses that utilize our T91 complex. Staff recommends naming the new cruise facility Smith Cove Cruise Terminal to establish the separate identity the cruise passenger terminal will command as one of the most active business interests served at the T91 complex during the annual cruise seasons. Smith Cove is a landmark body of water located in the northern part of Elliott Bay. The location was named in the early 1900's after Dr. Henry A. Smith (1830 -1915) one of the first white pioneers to settle in what is now Seattle. Dr. Smith was recognized in history as being instrumental in the development of Interbay and bringing the railroads to Seattle which in turn constructed the first piers in the area we now operate as the T91 complex. The Port of Seattle also owns and maintains a public access park located within the T91 Complex which is named Smith Cove Park. Our other cruise passenger terminal located within the Pier 66 complex is named Bell Street Cruise Terminal after the landmark name of a former city street end which was vacated as part of the P66 development. At the regular commission meeting of January 13, 2009 Port Commission approved First Reading of Resolution 3210 Naming the new cruise Smith Cove Cruise Terminal REQUESTED ACTION Resolution No. 3210 Second Reading and Final Passage, Naming the new cruise terminal located on Pier 91 "Smith Cove Cruise Terminal"
