PORT OF SEATTLE
MEMORANDUM

COMMISSION AGENDA-STAFF BRIEFING
Item No. 7a
Date of Meeting July 14, 2009
DATE: July 7, 2009
TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer
FROM: Jane Kilburn, Director, Public Affairs

SUBJECT: Port Centennial

BACKGROUND

The Port of Seattle was created on September 5, 1911, the first autonomous municipal corporation
in the United States that specialized in harbor and port terminals and the development of the
commerce of the port. The enabling legislation was the Port District Act of 1911.

We are beginning to organize and plan for our Centennial in just two years' time. It will be a
milestone that many entities and individuals in the communityand around the statewill want to
celebrate. We would like to take a few minutes to brief the Commission on status to date.
