PORT OF SEATTLE
MEMORANDUM

COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 6a
Date of Meeting September 1, 2009
DATE: August 18, 2009
TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer
FROM: Mary Gin Kennedy, Director of Commission Services
SUBJECT: Motion in honor of Labor Day

ACTION REQUESTED:

Request for the Port Commission to adopt a motion honoring Labor Day.

SYNOPSIS:

Organized labor plays an important role at the Port and in Port-related industries. Since its
inception, the Port has worked with organized labor to make the Seaport and the Airport among
the most competitive in the nation. About half of the Port's workforce is unionized, and over
11,000 union members work in Port-related industries at the Airport and Seaport. The Port's
positive relationship with organized labor has fostered mutual cooperation and trust between the
Port and its represented employees.

This motion, which expresses the "sense of the Commission," acknowledges the essential role of
all of the hard working men and women employed at the Port or in Port-related industries and
congratulates them and organized labor on the occasion of Labor Day.
