Exhibit B
Exhibit "B" . Port CommissionSMClOJ Meeting otggsacf, 3100? Amy Thomson 1505 SW Alaska St Seattle, WA 98106 Phone:(206) 923-2972 email:amy@jetcity.com To the Port Commissioners and other interested parties, Dear Gentlepersons, Because I am unable to attend this meeting, I am writing to express my feelings regarding the Nicklesville homeless camp currently sited at Terminal 109 Park on West Marginal Way SW. Even though Nicklesville has been moving around in our area, I have pretty much let them be. I assumed that like SHARE/WHEEL, Nicklesville would move around from place to place. Because I know that the city has not adequately addressed the problem of homelessness, I was willing to allow them to be in our area for a month or two, but now I hear that there are plans to have them settle permanently in T 109 park, and create a path through Puget Park to the bus stop on 215'. I object strenously to this for the following reasons: 0 An ongoing homeless settlement threatens my personal sense of safety and security, and that of my family. 0 It will lower the property values of our house. 0 I will be afraid to let my daughter play unsupervised outdoors. 0 I will fear for my husband's safety when he goes on walks on the Duwamish bike path that passes through T109 park. 0 For a number of years the West Seattle Girl Scouts have worked to remove invasive species from the park. I would not be able to allow our troop to take part in this service activity, and I'm pretty sure that most other troop leaders will feel the same way about this. 0 I feel like our neighborhood has unfairly been neglected by the city. The soils in Puget Park are contaminated with cement kiln dust and heavy metals, and we have no fire hydrants anywhere in our neighborhood, because the city refuses to deal with this issue. N0w they are planning to dump impoverished homeless people in our neighborhood because they think no one lives here. Well there are people up here. We have children, and we are angry that the city seems to think our neighborhood is some kind of dumping ground. Okay, enough personal reasons. I have the following objections to the camp on behalf of the homeless people. 0 The homeless don't deserve to be dumped anywhere just because they are poor. 0 There is no transit within 1.6 miles via city streets. The nearest bus stop would require residents of Nicklesville to walk through blackberrychoked woods in a park contaminated with toxic heavy metals. 0 The Duwamish is a superfund site. The residents of Nicklesville deserve better than to be shunted here because the city will not step up to the plate. The way we treat homeless people in this city is a travesty. The Port should not have to deal with issues that the City of Seattle has failed to properly address. I lay this failing at the feet of the city government. I urge the city to find better solutions to the problems of homelessness. The people of Nicklesville are just trying to find a safe, clean place to live. They deserve better than they're getting, and our neighborhood deserves better than to be a dumping ground for the city's failures. Please find better solutions than a permanent Nicklesville encampment in T109 Park. Respect our neighborhood, and respect the homeless. Thank AmgcwwxYou,
