SUBJECT:  Special Order of Business  Recognize the 2015 Seattle-Tacoma International
Airport Green Gateway Environmental Excellence Award Winners 
BACKGROUND 
In honor of Earth Day (4/22/2016), Airport staff would like to recognize winners of Seattle-
Tacoma International Airport's (Airport) Green Gateway Environmental Excellence Awards 
(Awards Program). The Awards Program annually recognizes Airport tenants, airlines, and
business partners for outstanding environmental leadership, and encourages continuous
improvement by celebrating their accomplishments and acknowledging the critical role they play
in assisting the Port in meeting its environmental goals. 
2015 AWARD WINNERS: 
This year, Port staff introduces a new Honor Roll distinction to recognize repeat award winners
whose maintenance of past accomplishments and current efforts demonstrate continued support
for Port objectives. 
HMSHost (Environmental Performance). Airport staff recommends an award with Honor Roll
distinction for HMSHost's continued support of Port sustainability objectives including specific
2015 accomplishments in food donation, community giving, energy conservation, and waste
reduction. These actions demonstrate continuous commitment to supporting Port waste
minimization and energy conservation objectives, and the airport community. HMSHost: 
Recycled over 100 tons of glass and 25 tons of cardboard from HMSHost's STIA supply
warehouse; 
Led all Concessionaires in STIA's food donation program for the fourth year in a row by
donating 19,900 lbs. of food (45% of 2015 donations) or approximately 306 meals to the Des
Moines Area Food Bank (DMAFB) each week;

Implemented a customer donation program at six restaurants and gave 100% of donated
funds to the DMAFB. Donations for 2015 exceeded $20,000 and were used by the DMAFB
to provide food-filled backpacks to families during weekends when the food bank is closed; 
Installed new Energy Star-rated water heater at one Chili's Too and ice machines at three
Starbucks units; 
Maintained recognized accomplishments from past awards including composting organics
and coffee grounds, replacing disposable plateware and silverware with durables, replacing
disposable towels with laundry service, replacing lights with energy-efficient LED
alternatives, and using Energy-Star rated equipment to conserve energy and reduce oil waste. 
Hudson News (Environmental Performance). Airport staff recommends an award for Hudson
News' 2015 accomplishments in food donation. This action demonstrates a continuous
commitment to supporting Airport waste minimization objectives and the airport community.
Hudson News: 
Donated 17,176 lbs. of food to STIA's United Service Organizations (USO) lounge and 208
lbs. to the DMAFB. Hudson's innovative approach expanded the community of donation
recipients and accounted for 39% of total 2015 donations or approximately 267 meals per
week; 
Maintained recognized accomplishments from past awards including composting coffee
grounds and recycling waste. 
Alaska Airlines (Environmental Performance/Innovation). Airport staff recommends an award
for Alaska Airlines' 2015 accomplishments reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions, promoting
development and use of aviation biofuels, and recycling waste. These actions demonstrate
commitment to supporting Airport Greenhouse Gas emissions reduction, biofuel development,
energy conservation, and waste minimization objectives. Alaska Airlines: 
Performance 
Decreased aircraft fuel consumption by adding split scimitar winglets to 85% of all
eligible aircraft. By 12/31/15, Alaska completed 90 such modifications including 45 
aircraft in 2015 estimated to save 2 million gallons of fuel; 
Increased inflight recycling capture rate from 81% to 83% and reduced waste to landfill
per passenger by 31% from 0.29 lbs. to 0.20 lbs.; 
Reduced paper consumption by 13 million sheets (or 14%) compared to 2014 by
implementing JetPack, a mobile technology app that replaced traditional paper-based
systems to relay flight statistics to pilots and crew. Alaska's paper and toner consumption

at STIA decreased 50% and Alaska estimates JetPack will save roughly $200,000 per
year at STIA; 
Innovation 
Initiated inflight composting at 12 mainline airports (including STIA) through partnership
with flight kitchens, and launched composting at the Gold Coast office building at STIA,
which diverted approximately 300 gallons of compost from landfill weekly; 
Partnered with the Port and Boeing to conduct a feasibility study of infrastructure needed
to bring biofuels to all carriers at STIA. The joint study will evaluate costs and
infrastructure necessary for blending and delivering biofuels; 
Partnered with GEVO, Inc. to be the first airline to fly aircraft using alcohol-to-jet fuel
(first flight expected in 2016) and worked with Washington State University and the
Northwest Advanced Renewable Alliance to advance production and use of jet fuel made
from "woody waste" remains from forest harvesting; 
Implemented final phase of "Greener Skies" in April 2015, reducing Alaska's fuel
consumption by 87 gallons per flight, which could reduce annual fuel consumption by
1.56 million gallons and CO2 emissions by 14,350 tons. 
ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: 
Airport staff created the Awards Program in 2010 such that one or more awards may be given
each year, depending on the quality and quantity of nominations received. The Airport accepts
nominations for any project, process, or action that promotes environmental leadership and
stewardship in one of three Environmental categories:
Performance 
Education and Outreach 
Innovation 
Between December 2015 and January 2016, the Airport accepted award nominations for
projects, processes, or actions completed during 2015. Port staff received four nominations from
four nominees in the Environmental Performance/Innovation (3) and Education and Outreach (1) 
categories. A panel of Aviation Division staff from multiple departments reviewed the
nominations in accordance with criteria established for each category, and recommended winners 
to Airport senior management.
Senior management concurred with the panel's recommendation to award three 2015 
Environmental Excellence Awards. Port staff notified award nominees of award decisions on
March 31, 2016.

NEXT STEPS: 
Port of Seattle Commissioners will have the opportunity to present commemorative plaques to
award winners during the April 26, 2016 Commission meeting. Port staff will also acknowledge
Environmental Excellence Award Winners on banners located inside the Airport terminal or via
digital media outlets, and in a public press release.
