PORT OF SEATTLE MEMORANDUM COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 3b STAFF BRIEFING Date of Meeting April 22, 2014 DATE: April 3, 2014 TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer FROM: Elizabeth Leavitt, Director Aviation Planning and Environmental Services and Stephanie Jones Stebbins, Director, Seaport Environment and Planning SUBJECT: Environmental Accomplishments for 2013 SYNOPSIS In honor of Earth Day, staff would like to provide an overview of the Port's environmental and sustainability accomplishments for 2013 for both Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and the Seaport. Our review will focus on key successes, business partners, and metrics, along with a brief summary of upcoming initiatives. BACKGROUND Both Aviation and Seaport Environment and Planning Departments have strong initiatives aimed at meeting our environmental goals. Our environmental accomplishments at the Airport this year are particularly noteworthy as two of them: the electric ground support equipment initiative and pre-conditioned air, required almost a decade of planning and extensive collaboration among numerous partners, and will achieve significant pollution reductions. Both these initiatives help airlines reduce not only their environmental emissions, but operate more efficiently and save fuel. Similarly, the Seaport continued to implement its highly successful clean air initiatives, adopting an updated Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy that sets aggressive reduction goals for the coming years. The Seaport received clean air awards from the American Lung Association and USEPA's Clean Air Excellence Award. The Seaport also began construction of remediation projects at Terminals 91 and 117, and continued to make progress at our East Waterway and Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund sites.
