PORT OF SEATTLE
MEMORANDUM
COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 7a
STAFF BRIEFING Date of Meeting May 28, 2013

DATE: May 17, 2013
TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer
FROM: Linda Styrk, Managing Director, Seaport
Geri Poor, Regional Transportation Manager
SUBJECT: Duwamish Transportation Management Association - SoDo
Transportation Project interim status briefing
SYNOPSIS:
Dave Gering, the Executive Director of the Duwamish Transportation Management
Association (TMA), will brief the Commission on the SoDo Transportation Project as it
approaches its concluding public forum on June 12, 2013.
BACKGROUND:
The Port of Seattle joined other partners and neighbors in the Duwamish Manufacturing
Industrial Council to sponsor and help fund business and community outreach to assess
the transportation and mitigation needs of the Port's container terminals and Duwamish
Manufacturing Industrial Center (Duwamish MIC) freight and traffic management issues
and concerns. The work began in early 2013. A public forum presenting interim
outreach results and soliciting input from participants was held April 16 at the Stanford
Center. The project will culminate with a public forum on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at
2-4 p.m. with community presenters at the Colin Auditorium at the Georgetown Campus
of South Seattle Community College. Members from the city and county councils, the
Port Commission, and the state legislature have been invited and at least one
representative for each of those groups has responded with their attendance.
This research informs the Port, regional decision-makers, and the general public about
long-standing Port, maritime sector, and Duwamish MIC transportation assets, needs and
concerns, and their linkages to the Port's, the City of Seattle's, and King County's
continued economic success. The final report will present findings and recommendations
from two door-to-door surveys of businesses in the Duwamish. It will list freight and
traffic improvements that will be necessary to support the continued vitality of the Port
and the manufacturing and industrial sectors, which support thousands of jobs in our
region.
