Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Green Gateway Environmental
Excellence Awards Program 

In honor of Earth Day, staff would like to recognize winners of the 2012 Seattle-Tacoma
International Airport Green Gateway Environmental Excellence Awards  Program
(Awards Program). The Awards Program annually recognizes Airport tenants, airlines,
and business partners for outstanding environmental leadership. The Awards Program is
intended to encourage continuous environmental improvement by celebrating tenant,
airline, and business partner accomplishments and acknowledging the critical role they
play in assisting the Port in meeting its environmental goals. 
2012 AWARD WINNERS: 
FedEx (Environmental Performance Category) 
o  Replaced old lighting at Air Cargo facility with new energy efficient lights
and occupancy sensors and participated in the Port's energy saving
incentive program.
o  In 2012, FedEx replaced 191 high wattage non-fluorescent lamps and
fixtures with T5 or T8 high performance lamps and fixtures and
occupancy sensors.
o  Estimated annual energy savings from this lighting retrofit amounts to
377,377 kWh per year, or 70% energy savings, resulting in estimated
annual utility bill savings of $33,341. The project is expected to have a
1.5 year payback without factoring in partial installation funding provided
through the Bonneville Power Administration energy saving incentive
program.

Concessions International (Environmental Performance Category) 
o  Reduced waste sent to landfill by increasing recycling and composting at
Airport stores.
o  In 2012, participating stores reduced trash disposal 21% compared to 2011
by recycling plastic milk jugs, plastic bags and product packaging, and
composting food-soiled fibers and food scraps. 
o  Saved $5,000 in garbage disposal fees. 
Keeney's Office Supply (Environmental Education and Outreach) 
o  Assisted the Port of Seattle in procuring sustainable office supplies by
developing and implementing a Sustainable Office Program. The program
included analysis of Port office product procurement habits, and
identification of sustainable and lower cost alternatives. 
o  In 2012, Port purchases of recycled content paper products reached 85%
(an increase from 82% in 2011), and purchases of other sustainable nonpaper
products reached 39%. 
o  Implemented an on-line supply ordering system that prioritizes sustainable
office products over alternatives, includes aggressive prices on recycled
content paper, and suggests substitutes when a buyer selects a similar nonsustainable
item. 
o  Provided Port employees with system training, support, and customer
service as well as guidelines on suggested alternative office supplies. 
o  Implemented used product recycling for toner cartridges, pens, markers,
mechanical pencils, and packaging materials. 
ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: 
The Awards Program was created in 2010 and is designed such that the Airport may
present one or more awards each year, depending on the quality of the nominations
received. Nominations are accepted for any project, process, or action that promotes
environmental leadership and stewardship in one of three categories:
Environmental Performance 
Environmental Education and Outreach 
Environmental Innovation

Between December 2012 and January 2013, the Airport accepted award nominations for
projects, processes or actions completed during 2012. Four nominations were received in 
the Environmental Performance category, and one in the Environmental Education and
Outreach category. A panel of Aviation Division staff reviewed those nominations, in
accordance with criteria established for each category, and recommended winners to
Airport  Senior  Management.    Senior  management  concurred  with  panel
recommendations that three nominations (two Environmental Performance and one
Environmental Education and Outreach) w ould receive 2012 Environmental Excellence
Awards. Awards in the Environmental Innovation category will not be presented this
year, but all three categories will again be considered next year. 
NEXT STEPS: 
Port staff notified winners of 2012 awards on March 22, 2013. Commemorative plaques
will be presented to award winners by Port of Seattle Commissioners during the April 23,
2013, Commission meeting. The Port will also acknowledge winners on banners located
inside the Airport terminal, in a press release to local media and the public, and other
media outlets.
