BACKGROUND:
The Port of Seattle had a very productive year in 2012, as evidenced by several major awards 
received in recognition of achievements in a number of areas. Particularly noteworthy were the
awards for the port's environmental leadership, centennial products and financial reporting. In 
all, the port received 30 awards. Below is a brief summary of awards that deserve special
attention, and a comprehensive list. 
Financial Reporting: 
Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada 
Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting - 2011 Comprehensive
Annual Financial Report (CAFR) 
Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada 
Award of Financial Reporting Achievement 
Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada 
2012 Distinguished Budget Presentation Award 

Environmental: 
LEED Silver Certification  The Port of Seattle received the LEED Silver award from
the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for the design, construction and operation of
the consolidated Rental Car Facility at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. This is
currently the largest consolidated rental car facility in the nation to be certified Silver by
the USGBC, the nation's preeminent program for high performance green buildings. 
Rental Car Facility Public Project of the Year - NAIOP (Commercial Real Estate
Development Association)  Washington State Chapter.

Propeller Club's Business of the Year (2012)  Environmental Initiative 
Port of Seattle's Marine Maintenance won for finding alternative methods for cleaning
docks without disturbing water or marine life on port property. 
Work Boat Judges Special Recognition Award (2012)  Environmental Initiative 
The Port received the Special Judges' Recognition Award for an innovative vacuum
scrubber system developed to clean concrete docks that surpass State and Federal
mandates. 
King County Best Work Place for Waste Prevention and Recycling  Honor Roll  
Sea-Tac Airport 
Communications Awards: 
American Association of Port Authorities 
Award of Excellence: 
Know Your Port by Bike Centennial Event 
Award of Recognition: 
Centennial Video Contest for Students 
Award of Merit: 
Rising Tides and Tailwinds 
National Association of Government Communicators

ACI-NA Marketing and Communications competition 
1st Place for best radio advertising 
2012 World Routes Airport Marketing Award  
3rd Place for best overall marketing campaign "Highly Commended Award", Americas
Region (essentially 2nd place after DFW) presented in Abu Dhabi at World Routes

Employee/Employer Recognition: 
Employer Support of Guard and Reserve Freedom Award - The Port of Seattle is one
of 15 employers to receive the prestigious Secretary of Defense Employer Support
Freedom Award. 
Sailor of the Year - Sergeant Doug Newman, Port of Seattle Police Department and the
U.S. Navy Reserves, was named the Navy Reserve Sailor of the Year. Newman received
the award in Washington, D.C. in April. 
Fit-Friendly Workplace - The Port was recognized as a Gold Level Recipient of the
American Heart Association's Fit-Friendly Worksites Recognition program which
recognizes employers who champion a healthy worksite. 
Other 2012 awards include: 
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. - The Port of
Seattle Police Department has earned a highly-prized national accreditation from the
Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), only the
second port police agency in the nation to ever receive the endorsement. 
Flight Stats On-Time Performance - For the second year in a row, flight tracking
company FlightStats honored Seattle-Tacoma International Airport as the winner of its
2011 On-time Performance Award in the category of major international airports. Sea-
Tac also finished as a finalist in the category for major North American airports. 
Maritime Industry Public Official of the Year Award  Outgoing Port Commission
President Gael Tarleton received the Maritime Industry Public Official of the Year
Award at the annual Seattle Maritime Festival Luncheon. 
Internship Employer of the Year  Presented by Seattle University. The legacy of the
port's internship program was identified for the continued commitment to high school and
college students by creating opportunities for growth, experience and professional
development. 
Internal Awards: 
Internal Small Business Champion Award  Presented to Harbor Services, Real Estate
Division, for increasing small business participation at the Port during 2011. 
Charles Blood Champion of Diversity  Tom Berg, Marine Maintenance, was chosen
as the 2012 recipient because he took the initiative to make significant contributions to

the port's efforts to further diversity among its staff, its customers and in the surrounding
community 
Police Officer of the Year - Thirteen-year veteran Detective Steven Ivey was honored as
the Port of Seattle Police Officer of the Year for 2012. 
Firefighter of the Year - The Port of Seattle Fire Department has honored Captain Todd 
Starkey with the 2012 Port of Seattle Firefighter of the Year award.
