Item Number: 8a_motion Meeting Date: March 26, 2019 1 MOTION 2019-04: 2 A MOTION OF THE PORT OF SEATTLE COMMISSION 3 4 adopting the charter of the Workforce Development 5 Special Committee as attached to develop information, 6 advice and recommendations to the Port of Seattle 7 Commission on how best to promote women and minority 8 business enterprise growth, small business growth, and 9 workforce development with a focus on increasing 10 workforce training, job, and business opportunities for 11 local communities in trade, travel, and logistics. 12 13 PROPOSED 14 MARCH 26, 2019 15 16 TEXT OF THE MOTION 17 18 The Port of Seattle Commission hereby adopts the attached charter of the Workforce 19 Development Special Committee to provide information, advice and recommendations to the 20 Port of Seattle Commission in pursuit of the Port's Century Agenda goal to use the Port's 21 influence as an institution to promote women and minority business enterprise (WMBE) 22 growth, small business growth, and workforce development with a focus on the objective to 23 increase workforce training, job, and business opportunities for local communities in trade, 24 travel, and logistics. 25 26 The Committee will also make reccomendations to the Commission on how the Port can create 27 a foundation for a diverse economy with a focus on industries necessary to support Port capital 28 construction and wider economic vitality. 29 30 STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF THE MOTION 31 32 The Worforce Development Special Committee, chaired by Commissioners Stephanie Bowman 33 and Ryan Calkins, has been chartered to review the Century Agenda strategy associated with 34 workforce development, to review and make recommendations for updating the workforce 35 development policy and the five year strategic plan. The committee will also provide 36 recommendations for the development of the maritime high school feasibility and business 37 plan development. 38 39 This will be the first year for the Workforce Development Committee. The timing coincides with 40 the fourth year of the current five-year strategic plan and five years after adoption of a motion Motion 2019-04 Workforce Development Committee Charter Page 1 of 2 41 on "Increasing Workforce Development and Career Opportunities Activities" on July 1, 2014. 42 The five-year strategic plan and the motion have guided workforce development efforts at the 43 Port. 44 45 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ATTACHED 46 Workforce Development Committee Charter 47 Motion 2019-04 Workforce Development Committee Charter Page 2 of 2
