This award recognizes and celebrates the Des Moines Area Food Bank, and our decade long
partnership feeding our neighboring communities and reducing waste through the Airport's
food donation program. The Des Moines Area Food Bank:
Received and distributed nearly 50,000 lbs. of Airport food donations within the local
Airport community (roughly 800 meals per week over entire year)
Helped reduce Airport solid waste handling costs by avoiding $3,400 in landfill disposal fees
Since 2006, the food bank helped Airport tenants donate over 229,000 lbs. or 183,000
meals of nutritious, ready-to-eat food to families within neighboring airport communities.
HMSHost (Prime Airport Dining and Retail Operator) Honor Roll
This award recognizes HMSHost's continued commitment to support Port sustainability
objectives including food donation, energy conservation, and waste reduction and recycling.

Donated 31,038 meals (38,798 lbs. of food) through the Airport Food Donation Program

the Des Moines Area Food Bank's Weekend Backpack Program serving local children
Donated 20 used tables and 45 used chairs from office and restaurant renovations to local
charitable organizations
Recycled 45 tons of glass and 23 tons of cardboard from Airport warehouse, and kept 7,000
used pallets from landfill through a re-use program
Replaced incandescent lights with energy-efficient LED light bulbs and replaced appliances
with Energy-Star rated equipment
Replaced disposable service ware with compostable and/or recyclable alternatives and
disposal towels with laundry service.
Ivar's (Airport Dining and Retail Operator)
This award recognizes Ivar's waste reduction, recycling, and composting and water conservation
programs. Ivar's:
Reduced waste by choosing reusable liner-less trays over disposable bags for food service
delivery, which generated 238,307 fewer paper "to-go" bags and an equally fewer amount
of tray liners
Recycled 30,000 plastic chowder bags by taking time to clean each bag prior to recycling
Routinely used compost (food waste) and recycling bins to cut back-of-house restaurant
waste in half
Conserved water by thawing frozen products in walk-in coolers vs. running under cool water
