BRIEFING ITEM Date of Meeting April 25, 2017
DATE: April 7, 2017

FROM: Stephanie Jones Stebbins, Director Maritime Environment and Sustainability
SUBJECT: Special Order of Business Green Gateway Partner Awards 2016
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Staff would like to highlight the recipients of the Port's seventh annual Green Gateway Partner
Awards, awarded to the Port of Seattle's cruise line partners for their superior environmental
programs, innovation, and continuous improvement.
GREEN GATEWAY PARTNER AWARDS 2016
The Green Gateway Partners initiative is one element of the Port's maritime air quality program
that focuses on reducing air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions and outreach to port
business partners. This program is one tool to implement the Northwest Ports Clean Air
Strategy as well as the Century Agenda goal to reduce air pollutants; however, it encompasses a
broad range of environmental performance.
This is the seventh year that the Port has recognized qualifying cruise lines for their superior
environmental programs, continuous improvement, and innovative approaches. (With the
formation of The Northwest Seaport Alliance, the container line element was dropped from our
program in 2015). The name of the awards Green Gateway Partners complements the Port's
commitment to environmental sustainability as a green gateway.
Following an overhaul to the award process last year, this year's awards are streamlined. There
is a basic "Partnership Award", which is awarded to cruise lines showing efforts to exceed
regulatory requirements in at least four of five categories: air emissions/energy conservation,
water management, waste reduction, environmental awareness, and third party certification.
All five lines applying for the award met this threshold. The application review and scoring
system were done by a third party, EA Engineering, Science and Technology, Inc.
The 2016 Green Gateway Partners are:
Carnival Cruise Line's recycling incentive program for all vessels in the fleet, and
participation in initiatives such as Coastal Cleanup Day & World Oceans Day especially
impressed the Port.

customers who visit the Port of Seattle.
Alongside our third-party consultant, we will be updating the award program in 2017 to make
sure this program promotes continuous improvement and meaningful environmental
stewardship. The evolution and expansion of the Green Gateway Awards program is one
strategy to implement the Century Agenda's goals of environmental sustainability.
