PORT OF SEATTLE
MEMORANDUM
COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 7b
STAFF BRIEFING
Date of Meeting April 26, 2016
DATE: April 26th, 2016
TO: Ted Fick, Chief Executive Officer
FROM: Leslie Stanton, Manager, Environmental Sustainability
Elizabeth Leavitt, Director Aviation Planning and Environmental Services
SUBJECT: Airport Annual Environmental Sustainability Progress Report
SYNOPSIS
The Aviation Environmental Sustainability Manager will present the airport's progress achieved
in 2015 towards our environmental sustainability objectives, which includes related Century
Agenda goals. These objectives are part of our Strategy for a Sustainable Sea-Tac (S3) that was
presented to the Commission in early 2015. The S3 objectives build on the environmental
successes we achieved under our 2009 Environmental Strategy Plan. Since this presentation
follows the briefing on the environmental chapter of the Long Range Plan, we will focus on the
broader range of environmental initiatives.
BACKGROUND
Sea-Tac Airport has been a leader among airports in North America for our environmental
sustainability program, and in 2009 developed one of the nation's first environmental strategy
plans that extended our environmental work beyond complying with environmental regulations.
Sea-Tac completed that plan in 2014, and AV Environmental developed a new plan entitled
Strategy for a Sustainable Sea-Tac or S3 that identifies new goals, objectives, and actions for the
next phase of our environmental sustainability program. AV Environmental presented the S3
goals, objectives and actions to Commission on February 10, 2015.
At the same time that we developed S3, AV environmental staff began developing the
sustainability approach for the airport's Sustainable Airport Master Plan (SAMP). S3 goals and
objectives were integrated into the master plan and we added SAMP tasks to evaluate how future
growth at Sea-Tac would impact key environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions,
energy use, and water use. We will use the results of those SAMP tasks to revise the actions in
S3. We expect to issue a final S3 that is consistent with the SAMP by Q4 2016.
JUSTIFICATION AND DETAILS
Because the Port has focused on a few key environmental programs this year such as aviation
biofuels, TNCs, and the Long Range Plan, the presentation will highlight progress and next steps
on the broader range of S3 environmental initiatives including:
