Item No.: 4c
Meeting Date: April 23, 2013
PORT OF SEATTLE COMMISSION
Motion to Appoint a New Commissioner
to Fill Vacant Position No. 3
April 23, 2013
Statement in Support of Motion
In accordance with RCW 42.12.070, the Seattle Port Commission (the "Commission") is
authorized to appoint a new Commissioner to fill any vacancies on the Commission within 90
days until a successor is elected and qualified at the next general election, which will be held on
November 5, 2013.
On February 13, 2013, Seattle Port Commissioner Rob Holland sent the King County
Council a letter announcing his resignation for personal reasons effective on March 15, 2013.
The Commission is pleased that twenty-seven well-qualified King County citizens were
interested in being considered for this position, including the four finalists and fifteen applicants
from an earlier Commission vacancy and eight new applicants. Twenty applicants addressed the
Commission or sent written statements outlining their interest in and qualifications for the
position at the March 26, 2013, Commission meeting. The Commissioners reviewed the
qualifications of the applicants and announced the names of seven finalists on March 27, 2013.
To introduce the finalists to the public, the Commission hosted a town hall meeting on
April 2, 2013, at Port of Seattle headquarters. Seattle Times editorial writer Bruce Ramsey
served as the moderator and asked a series of questions designed to test the finalists' knowledge
of issues facing the Port of Seattle. This meeting provided an excellent opportunity to learn
about the finalists' views and gauge how they would approach many of the issues facing the
Commission.
The Commission has carefully considered the qualifications of the seven finalists and has
decided on the applicant who will best serve the citizens of King County until the next general
election.
Motion
The Seattle Port Commission, in accordance with RCW 42.12.070 and Article III, Section 4, of
the Commission Bylaws, hereby selects ________________ to serve as a Seattle Port
Commissioner in Position No. 3 until the successor to the office has been elected and qualified at
the general election on November 5, 2013.
The appointment will be effective after the administration of the Oath of Office at a time to be
announced later.
