PORT OF SEATTLE
MEMORANDUM
COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 9a
Date of Meeting January 8, 2013
DATE: January 2, 2013
TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer
FROM: Tom Barnard, Commission Policy Analyst
SUBJECT: Port of Seattle Roundtable on industrial business growth
BACKGROUND:
The Port of Seattle Commission is holding this roundtable discussion on industrial
business growth. The roundtable will focus on policies to promote business growth and
jobs in the industrial and maritime sectors. This event will be part of the Commission's
regular meeting on January 8, 2013.
The discussion is intended to highlight the key issues that business owners consider in
making decisions about siting and expanding industrial and maritime businesses in the
Duwamish Maritime Industrial Center (MIC) specifically and the industrial areas
generally. As a result of the decision by Seattle and King County to approve development
of a new SODO sports arena, the Port, City, and County are now engaged in a
collaborative effort to examine these issues.
The Commission also hopes to hear insights from panelists about recommendations
concerning actions the city, port, and other agencies can take to provide incentives and
remove regulatory, utility, and permitting obstacles to industrial and maritime growth.
The overall objective of this and other discussions is to contribute to efforts that will
strengthen the long-term viability of the MIC, protect industrial uses and Port operations,
and implement incentives for industrial business growth.
