W MEMORANDUM COMMISSIONG . Item No. 7a STAFF BRIEFING' ' "Date of Meeting " June 26, 2012 ' ' ' DATE: June 15, 2012 TO: Tay Yoshitani Chief Executive Ofcer FROM: Mark Reis, Managing Director, Aviation-DivisW ' Elizabeth Leavitt, Director, Aviation Planning and Envrronment' 21W SUBJECT: Airport Terminal Development Challenges at SeattleTacoma International Airport BACKGROUND : In 2011, SeattleTacoma International Airport served 32.8 million annual passengers and handled almost 315,000 aireld operations. Future projections of Airport activity suggest that the Airport might be the gateway for 47-53 million annual passengers by 20312038. The aireld can accommodate the operations necessary for this growth as currently constructed, but the landside facilities and terminal will require capital improvements to serve the growing number ofpassengers. Flaming for the short, medium, and long-term facilities to accommodate the projected landside growth occurs in a complex and dynamic environment. Our airline partners drive change through mergers and alignments, along with plans for facilities to accommodate growth and enhance the customer experience. The industry is rapidly changing through the deployment of technology. The way the Airport responds to these changes must be considered within the broader context of an aging facility, the challenge of facility modications in the midst of active operations, and the investments in improvements timed to meet the needs of the travelling public. Controlling costs is also an important consideration that must be balanced with other goals. These challenges also present opportunities to make our facility more efcient and sustainable. This brieng will summarize the existing challenges facing the facility, as well as the near and mid-term challenges the Airport must plan for, the goals that must be balanced to do this correctly, and proposed principles that will guide staff in this work.
