Date of Meeting __1/6/2009_ Item No. __6a-Supp___ Severe Storm Update 2008 Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Winter Storm 2008 Overview On Saturday, December 13, 2008, the Port of Seattle declared a Modified Snow Alert at SeaTac Airport. The Seattle area received 13.9 inches of snow over a period of thirteen days. 5 inches fell on the 21st and 6 inches on the 22nd with snow falling at 2 inches per hour at one point. Additionally, we experienced blizzard like sustained winds at SeaTac Airport of 30 knots peaking at 39 knots. Snow Removal Runways and Taxiways Snow Removal Teams usually consist of 50 to 60 staff, 30 pieces of equipment; with 2 teams working 12 hour operational periods. During this storm, 132,000 gallons of liquid deicer was applied to the aircraft movement areas; 8.25 tons of airside sand was applied along with 145,000 lbs of solid chemical deicer. SeaTac Airport remained open for the duration of this storm Snow Removal Roadside Operations To maintain airport operability; 8,415 gallons of liquid deicer was applied to airport roads and drives along with 357 tons of roadside sand and 43,353 lbs. of solid chemical deicer. Terminal Management The Emergency Coordination Center stood-up at 1300 hours on Dec. 18th and remained in continuous operation until it was demobilized at 1715 hours on Dec. 24th. Thirty Port employees worked 12 hour operational periods, most working multiple shifts. This is the longest continuous activation in Port history -- 6 days. Terminal Management More than 4,000 people sheltered in the nonsecured side of the terminal. Canceled flights caused baggage congestion as well as terminal crowding for rebooking. Employee Volunteers Approximately 150 employees and other volunteers assisted travelers in the terminal An additional 50 employees staffed the snow desk and Emergency Communication Center. Assistance of the volunteers was remarkable! Donations.
