PORT OF SEATTLE MEMORANDUM COMMISSION AGENDA-STAFF BRIEFING Item No. 7a Date of Meeting July 14, 2009 DATE: July 7, 2009 TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer FROM: Jane Kilburn, Director, Public Affairs SUBJECT: Port Centennial BACKGROUND The Port of Seattle was created on September 5, 1911, the first autonomous municipal corporation in the United States that specialized in harbor and port terminals and the development of the commerce of the port. The enabling legislation was the Port District Act of 1911. We are beginning to organize and plan for our Centennial in just two years' time. It will be a milestone that many entities and individuals in the communityand around the statewill want to celebrate. We would like to take a few minutes to brief the Commission on status to date.
