RE: Port permission for Shell Oil to use the Port of Seattle as a service center for drilling operations
The Port of Seattle should not allow Shell Oil to establish a service center for drilling operations. The Port has
an obligation to protect the safety of our citizens and the security of our waters and natural resources, which

are the basis of our economy.
_
Every business related decision should now include consideration of its effects on the warming climate, a
serious vulnerability to our national security according to the US Military.
.
Our economy would be stronger with a shift away from the burning of fossil fuels, which are the main cause of
global Warming. '
' Excellent alternatives exist, such
as solar, wind, batteries, and energy efficiency. Continued investment in oil to
be used in the future only increases sunk assets. Policies should Encourage investment in clean energy and
efficiency, which are dropping rapidly in cost are already cheaper than conventional energy in many places,
,
and which create more jobs per BTU than use of fossil fuels.
Studies show that businesses could increase profits and create millions of new jobs if fossil fuels costs were
higher and businesses provided consumers with more energy options.
A calculation of cost/benefits to a community which includes the cost of damages from the extreme weather,
acidification, floods, droughts, and their effects on water and food resources puts the price of usingoil and
other fossil fuels much higher than the clean energy and efficiency that are available '
Risks form oil spills and explosions are also a consideration. Continuing development of oil oil in the
, including
Arctic, risks disaster. There are numerous examples of accidents that demonstrate the high risk to the
environment: the wreck of the drilling ship Kulluk, the failure of the containment dome, and spills from the
Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon.
Polls show that most people in the US want more clean energy. Recent writing by former Secretaries of the
Treasury call for federal action to help the transition to a clean energy economy. The Port of Seattle decision
not to allow a Shell drilling operation here will be a step forward for safety and economic stability.

Subject: proposal to allOw Shell to use Seattle as base for Arctic drilling

To the Port Commissioners,

I respectfully submit my opinion regarding Shell's proposal to use Seattle as their base for Arctic exploration and drilling
operations. I have two main objections. First, I do not believe we should support an endeavor that so clearly
undermines the world's efforts to slow climate change. Second, as we recently read in the New York Times 12/30/2014
article, "The Wreck ofthe Kulluk", Shell is not a company that is prepared to manage this kind of operation in an
environmentally responsible way.

Thank you for considering my opinion.

To whom it may concern,

At the Port of Seattle, you have done so much to reduce your own carbon footprint and work to offer green
options. '

That being said, helping Shell Oil extract and burn more fossil fuels, particularly from the Arctic, would be a
step in exactly the wrong direction for the climate.

As elected public ofcials making decisions about the use of our Port, I urge you to oppose Shell's proposal to
use Terminal 5 as part of its Arctic drilling operations.

Thank you for considering my vieWs. I would appreciate receiving a response to this message.

Sincerely,

Jared Howe
