CAROLYN LAW

Carolyn Law has been working as a professional studio and public artist for ovel' 30 years. Her public art experience
encompasses a wide range of commissioned art projects, art plans, and curating exhibitions in public places. The public art
projects range widely from design team projects with designers, engineers, and/ol' landscape architects with considerable
interface with communities and governmental agencies to site-specific integrated artworks and tempOI'ary installations,
Over the years she has dev~loped different types of art plans for situations ranging from a single site such as a city hall to
multiple artworks being placed throughout a city park system over a period ofyears. She has been actively involved in
civic affairs concerning the built environment through on-going participation on various review bodies such as the Seattle
Design Commission, Light Rail Review Panel, and the new Baseball Stadium Community Review, and Public Art
Committees. Her studio art ranges from installations to works on paper.

Developed site artwork for one station on a new 6.5 mile light rail line.
2005-2011    Olympia Sidewalk Project, Olympia, WA
Researching artistic possibilities for a pervious concrete mix mandated by city planning for all city
sidewalks being developed through a city-wide levy, and developing three a1t projects for sidewalks in
three distinct neighborhoods ofthe city.

2004-2009     Greenbridge Housing Project, Seattle, WA
King County Public Housing Authority, on-going projects, varying budgets.
Working with various designers on art projects woven into a model I00-acre subsidized housing redevelopment
project. The first project on the "main street" incorporates three chain-saw carved totemic sculptures in to the
right-of-way, populating the sidewalk
2003-05       Depot Park, Santa Cruz, CA
City of Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Arts, Public Art Committee. Budget- $140,000
Developed an artwork for a major new park with active and passive uses is in the center oftown. The artwork is
integrated into the central plaza ofthe park The artwork references an adjacent to a wetland estuary.
2001- 2003     Tonalea Neighborhood Traffic Calming Project and Pedestrian Bridge,
Scottsdale, AZ  Scottsdale Arts Council
Worked with a design team to develop art concepts that challenged the nature of bland items placed in street to
calm traffic, and develop a prototype approach to various calming devices. The project also involved integrating
atiwork into a pre-fabricated bridge structure that crossed the canal along one edge ofthe neighborhood.
2000-0 I        Evanston Plaza, Fremont Quadrant Development, Seattle, WA
Quadrant Corpot-ation
Developed design changes and art concepts for a major waterfront public plaza in a 4 -building business
development within an established Seattle neighborhood. Initial budget plus construction credits.

1997-00     Novelty Hill Bridge, King County, WA
King County Cultural Affairs, Public Art Program, King County Bridges
Worked with project engineers to incorporate artwork into new bridge replacing an historic structure in rural King
County. This was the first bridge project in the county to involve and artist, and the focus was on creating a
component that could be used on subsequent bridges. The project evolved beyond this and set the precedent to
involve future attists. Budget - $190,000, w/ aspects ofthe art, part ofthe design and installed by contractor.
1995-96     "A Community Portrait of the Green River", Kent Arts Commission, Kent, WA
Two-pati project that involved developing a community participation component and a final permanent atiwork
The community aspect involved disttibuting one-shot pinhole cameras to various citizens and citizen groups to
capture one image oftheir choice ofthe river, and a one-day cyanotype event for citizen-generated imagery and
writing to be integrated into the artwork The final art piece is located along the Green River trail in the City of
Kent.
1993-1995    Town entrance markers, Design team for Transportation Center/Park, Ephrata, WA
Designed artworks to mark the three entrances/exits to the town, design team work on the new transportation
center fot- rail and bus and a city park The three entrance atiworks work offthe spectacular landscape ofsemi-
arid desert at the southern end ofthe Grand Coulee. They incorporate earthworks, local basalt rock in all its
vatiations from columns to tallis shatds, solar lighting and landscape ofindigenous plants
1983-85       Broad Street Electrical Substation, Seattle, W A.

Member of design team which designed an annex facility and changes to existing yard to unite the two facilities.
Within overall design thete were areas of discreet artwork Two 12'H x 75'Wsections offencing were designed:
one section was viewed by car commuters; the other section for pedestrians.

palsy which resulted in a group installation, which revealed aspects of their lives through art to the non-disabled

Limitations of Translatable Documents

PDF files are created with text and images are placed at an exact position on a page of a fixed size.
Web pages are fluid in nature, and the exact positioning of PDF text creates presentation problems.
PDFs that are full page graphics, or scanned pages are generally unable to be made accessible, In these cases, viewing whatever plain text could be extracted is the only alternative.
