John Kriese 
John recently retired as a senior executive with the federal government. During his distinguished 30-
year federal career, he led the start-ups of four new organizations within the defense community. 
His leadership was critical to defining missions and responsibilities, developing budgets, acquiring
funding, recruiting leaders and staff, and fostering effective relationships with a broad set of customers. 
He chaired two interagency committees, emphasizing inclusion, partnerships, open debate, and
adherence to the highest standards. He developed innovative ways to bring public and private expertise
to bear on critical challenges. He currently volunteers with the Seattle Chapter of SCORE as a member
of its Executive Committee and as a mentor helping people start and grow small businesses. John
attended the Foreign Service Institute and has a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from North Carolina State
University and a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame. John is not employed
by the Port, city, or county; he is retired. He does not live in either Magnolia or Queen Anne; he lives in
the Green Lake neighborhood.
