THE SEATTLE PORT COMMISSION'S MOTION IN HONOR OF VETERANS AND VETERANS DAY Statement in Support of the Motion The Port Commission of the Port of Seattle would like to take this opportunity to recognize, honor and thank all veterans who have served this nation with valor and integrity. We owe our freedom and the preservation of our way of life to the courage and sacrifice of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces, and the families, that have provided their unwavering support. Our Veterans have served over the past two centuries, sacrificing the comforts of civilian life to protect our freedom in times of war and peace. These service members stepped up to the challenges of defending this country with steadfast acts of selflessness and strength of spirit. Their dedication to this country is inspiring and deserving of our commitment of support as they hang up their uniforms. This day serves as a reminder that many veterans return home and continue to serve this county as parents, public servants, business and community leaders. They enter the civilian world with a strong work ethic and proven leadership skills. The Port recognized the need for a program to assist veteran's transition to the civilian workforce and launched the Veterans Fellowship Program in 2008 to aid with the challenges many service men and women face in adapting their military skills and knowledge to the civilian workplace. As part of this program, the Port provides short-term employment to assist veterans in identifying their transferable skills, exposing them to the civilian work environment and corporate business practices as well as assisting in their career development, resume writing and job interviewing skills. To date, twenty Veterans Fellows have successfully completed the Veterans Fellows Program and many have continued their careers here at the Port. This is one of the many ways veterans have contributed to the economic development of the region and the success of the Port. Therefore, the Port Commission would like to acknowledge the important role that Veterans have played in the Port's history and recognize their contributions to its continued success. Motion The Port Commission of the Port of Seattle hereby acknowledges and honors our veterans for their commitment to protecting the freedoms, justice and principles of the United States of America. We encourage all Americans to demonstrate their support for our veterans through any appropriate public and private ceremony on each Veterans Day and to reflect upon their contributions to the cause of peace and freedom around the world.
