Youth development through wooden boatbuilding, environmental science, and sailing in the South Bronx Bronx River Alliance Restoring the Bronx River corridor into a healthy ecological, recreational, educational, and economic resource for the communities through which the river flows Similar to the Duwamish River corridor, where the Port has made a similar commitment The New York Harbor School on Governors Island The school focuses on the NYC marine ecosystem, e.g., Billion Oyster Project Students attend from all five boroughs 1 out of 10 applicants are accepted via an equitable lottery system The New York Harbor School Career Pathways Professional Diving Vessel Operations Aquaculture Marine Systems Technology Ocean Engineering Marine Biology Research Marine Policy and Advocacy Northwest Maritime Center and Skills Center A community-based and regionally-oriented organization dedicated to experiential education that opened a Maritime Skills Center program this past fall Port Townsend School District The first place-based maritime K-12 educational system in the nation with a curriculum aligned with experiences in the local maritime community What We Learned Design: By the community, industry, trades and students Location: On or near the water and public transit Size: Small (400-500) so that every student is known by name, strength and need Enrollment: Equitable percentages of students of color, students with limited access to resources, and girls Staffing: Principal and teacher diversity should reflect the intended student population What We Recommend Community Engagement: No decision about us, without us Location: On the Duwamish Waterway, which provides ample access to water Equity: Industry constitutes a significant source of the region's employment, yet a small percentage of those who live there are employed there Enrollment: Representative of the students in South King County - selected by lottery Educational Model: A regional magnet, 400-500 students District: To be determined What We Recommend Career Connected: Project- and place-based learning aligned with state and industry certification standards Academics: Robust CTE pathways strongly connected to maritime and ocean science jobs Community: The interconnected nature of social equity, economic viability, and environmental protection, nested within the region's social fabric, will help partners pursue social justice and ensure community resilience What We Recommend Apprenticeship Opportunities: Employer- and union-based internships will help students receive high school, industry and college credit (T|2|4) A Partnership Coordinator: To connect students with internships and foster relationships with employers Prosperity of Place: The interconnected nature of social equity, economic viability, and environmental protection will be nested within the region's social fabric and environmental security as partners purse social justice and community resilience Public-Private Partnerships Prioritize innovation, collaboration and a consortium of support This group will work with school district leaders to establish a variety of support mechanisms for the curriculum, program and eventually, facilities What's Next February 25 Motion Community Engagement Legislative Support
