Here is my testimony today - thank you!
This is Laura Gibbons, a member of the 350 Seattle aviation team.
I am thrilled that the Port has a goal in their Century Agenda to "Be the
greenest, and most energy efficient port in North America". The work
that has been done for Scope 1 and Scope 2 around SEATAC is quite
impressive.
However, for Scope 3, just comparing ourselves to other airports isn't
going to be enough. Unchecked increase in aviation means those
numbers will be steadily rising, making it completely impossible to meet
climate goals. Furthermore, Scope 3 only considers the climate impacts
of aircraft during approach, take-offs, and climb-out, not the CO2 and
other harmful impacts of ALL the fuel that is pumped and uploaded at
SEATAC.
This is the Century Agenda, and humans won't be around another
Century if we keep this up. I urge you to revise the Century Agenda goal
to reflect the realities of aviation and climate change.
