Dear Port Commissioners,
My name is Sarah Shifley. I am a Seattle resident and volunteer with 350 Seattle's Aviation
Team. I am writing to provide comment on agenda items 8b and 8c.
Agenda Item 8b. While you consider issues related to the Aviation Flight Tracking,
Permanent and Portable Noise Monitoring, and Complaint Management System, I would ask
that you acknowledge that the majority of noise pollution from Sea-Tac Airport operations
impacts low-income communities and communities of color while the majority of people
flying on planes in and out of Sea-Tac airport do not come from these communities. I would
also ask that you acknowledge the impact of noise pollution on airport-impacted communities,
such as increased rates of cardiovascular and other physical health conditions and lower
learning outcomes for students. You are responsible for this environmental injustice -- please
stop ignoring it.
Agenda Item 8c. You are being asked to approve spending $62 million dollars to upgrade a
few restrooms at Sea-Tac. (I would note that this is 40 times greater than what you are being
asked to spend on the Aviation Flight Tracking, Permanent and Portable Noise Monitoring,
and Complaint Management System.) Why are you pouring money into a project to improve
the odor and "passenger experience" in a few airport bathrooms while at the same time
continuing to ignore the air quality destruction and environmental injustice Sea-Tac operations
engenders? How can you justify spending this amount of money on a few bathroom upgrades
while ignoring the harm Sea-Tac operations are having on the climate and airport-impacted
communities? I would ask that you not approve this project.
