My name is Sharla Dodd and I am a Seattle resident. I am commenting on Agenda Items 8j
and 10c. Please send an email confirmation that my comment was received and I would like
my comment summarized as follows: Burning of fuel at Sea-Tac makes up 43% of Seattle's
contribution to climate warming so the Port needs to take immediate action to address
and minimize these emissions by reducing Sea-Tac's flights. This will also do more to
minimize sound pollution for neighboring communities than any meager effort at indoor
sound insulation.
In regards to Agenda Item 8j (funding for the National Renewable Energy Lab) I believe that
the Port needs swift and decisiveaction on its bold commitments to being "green". The
continual expansion of Sea-Tac is directly counter to this commitment as it would result in a
doubling of emissions from fuel pumped. These emissions make up the lion's share of Sea-
Tac's total emissions and are one of Seattle's largest contributors to the climate crisis (likely
43% of Seattle's total GHG emissions in 2018 if non-CO2 impacts are included). The Port
must focus on addressing and decreasing the ever-growing emissions from fuel burned at Sea-
Tac by immediately ceasing all growth to increase capacity. Reliance on increasing SAFs in
the future or tinkering with Sea-Tac's heating and cooling (or any other small scale possible
reductions in emissions for that matter) just distract from the necessary reduction in flights that
is the simplest and most obvious solution. We are running out of time.
Additionally, while it is heartening to hear that the Port is interested in alleviating sound
pollution for Sea-Tac's neighboring communities I fear that this is more lip service than real
action. Insulating against sound pollution only works for indoor spaces and does nothing to
reduce concurrent air pollution. Again, the only and simplest path forward is a reduction in
flights, thereby reducing the air and noise pollution that burden our marginalized neighbors
living in communities nearest to Sea-Tac. It's time we started putting the needs of the earth
and the health and well being of all of our neighbors ahead of monied corporate interests that
are constantly pushing for unlimited growth on a finite planet. To avoid continued climate
degradation thePort needs to be accountable to us all and lead the way in choosing the only
real solution out of this mess - an immediate push to decrease GHG emissions by decreasing
Sea-Tac's flights.
Thank you for yourconsideration,
Sharla Dodd
