Dear Port Staff,
I am emailing a written comment (see below) for the Port Commissioners' regular meeting on
January 12, 2021. Please confirm receiptof this comment and ensure that my comment is
distributed and read prior to any vote on agenda item 11. Additionally, please summarize my
comment as follows: "In regards to agenda item 11, Ms. Dodd urges you to acknowledge that
the majority of emissions from Sea-Tac are caused by fuel burned by airplanes so any
effortsto minimize emissions from facilities operations mean nothing without concurrent
attempts to reduce Sea-Tac's flight activity."
Thanks, Sharla
OFFICIAL COMMENT:
To the Port of Seattle Commissioners,
I applaud your stated goal to eliminate the Port of Seattle's greenhouse gas emissions by 2050
(agenda item 11, "2020 Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy and Port of Seattle's Climate and
Air Action Plan) but I fear that your plan is short sighted as it focuses largely on emissions
from the Port's brick and mortar facilities. As the vast majority of Sea-Tac's greenhouse gas
emissions are generated by airplanes burning fuel, this strategy will not have a meaningful
impact without a concurrent sustained push in immediate degrowth in Sea-Tac's sheer number
of incoming and outgoing flights. A reduction in Sea-Tac's facility emissions is an important
component to net zero GHG emissions by 2050, but any reduction in this area would be
MORE than negated by the increased flight capacity that is being planned at Sea-Tac during
the same time period. To achieve the Port's emissions reduction goals there must be a dramatic
reduction in aviation activity - and we cannot waste time in beginning to take decisive action
in this direction. As Port Commissioners and community leaders we need your strong
commitment in moving toward the realization of a carbon neutral future. Nothing short of this
will allow us all to continue to thrive on this planet.
Thank you for your time, Sharla Dodd
