Dear Port Commissioners,
I'm writing to ask that cruise ships not return to Seattle. It's time to move beyond this harmful
industry.
Cruise ships create a lot of harmful pollution including noise pollution impacting our orca
populations, toxic emissions of carcinogens, and large quantities of greenhouse gas emissions
worsening the climate crisis.
The Port of Seattle claims it wants to be the "greenest port in North America," yet it still wants
to build an additional cruise ship terminal. Making room for more polluting cruise ship is not
in line with being the greenest port in North America.
The global pandemic continues. Even if all passengers are vaccinated, the people in the places
they visit may not be.
Equity issues exist in the industry. Workers often make low wages, work long hours, and lack
labor laws.
Cruise ships choose not to register their business in the US to avoid paying taxes, avoid labor
laws and avoid environmental regulations.
Please consider these reasons, and there are more, as evidence that bringing back cruise ships
to Seattle is detrimental to us all.
Thank you
Chris Cottrell
