  • THIS BEING THE LAST MEETING OF THE YEAR AND THE LAST MEETING THAT I WILL BE CHAIRING AT LEAST AT THIS TIME I'D LIKE TO SAY A FEW WORDS AND SOME OF YOU HAVE ALREADY HEARD THIS SOME OF THIS FROM THE STATE OF THE PORT YESTERDAY SO I APOLOGIZE THAT HAVE TO SAY SOME OF IT AGAIN BUT IT'S IMPORTANT AND I WANT THE BROADER PUBLIC ALSO AND OUR PORT STAFF WHO MAY NOT HAVE ATTENDED YESTERDAY TO HEAR SOME OF MY COMMENTS
  • AT THIS TIME- SO FIRST AND FOREMOST I WANT TO JUST SAY IT'S BEEN A GREAT HONOR TO SERVE THE PORT OF SEATTLE'S COMMISSION AS YOUR PRESIDENT IN 2020 AND TO SERVE THE PORT AND THE PUBLIC IN THIS CAPACITY
  • LOOKING BACK TO LAST JANUARY, NO ONE COULD HAVE ANTICIPATED WHAT WAS TO COME THIS YEAR
  • IT WAS LIKE A TITLE WAVE
  • AS I MENTIONED DURING YESTERDAY'S STATE OF THE PORT, WE ARE LIVING THROUGH AN UNPRECEDENTED TIME IN HISTORY, A TRIFECTA IF YOU WILL OF DEVASTATING GLOBAL PANDEMIC, RACIAL RECKONING, AND A DEEPENING OF ECONOMIC RECESSION
  • AS IF THIS WASN'T ENOUGH, THE CLOSURE OF THE WEST SEATTLE HIGH BRIDGE LEFT THE FUTURE OF OUR ENTIRE SEAPORT'S INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL OPERATIONS IN LIMBO
  • BUT WHAT I'VE BEEN MOST GRATIFIED ABOUT THIS YEAR WAS HOW OUR ENTIRE AMAZING PORT TEAM AROSE TO THE CHALLENGE, MOBILIZED, AND CAME UP WITH CREATIVE SOLUTIONS
  • AND MOST IMPORTANTLY KEPT THE HEALTH AND SAFETY AND WELLBEING OF OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR EMPLOYEES AND WORKERS OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY
  • I'D LIKE TO THANK MY FELLOW COMMISSIONERS, WHAT A STRONG LEADERSHIP TO NAVIGATE THE PORT THROUGH SUCH A DIFFICULT YEAR YOU'VE BEEN

  • OUR TEAM CAME UP WITH A PLAN ON HOW TO SAFELY KEEP OUR ESSENTIAL OPERATIONS GOING AND WE DID NOT SHUT DOWN

  • WE HAVE A DEBT OF ENORMOUS GRATITUDE TO YOU
  • OUR AMAZING HR TEAM IMMEDIATELY RESPONDED AND PROVIDED DAILY GUIDE WORKFORCE ON TELEWORKING AND COVID PROTOCOLS TO MINIMIZE THE RISK DURING OUR EMPLOYEES- AND TO ENSURE THAT OUR EMPLOYEES WERE SAFE AND HEALTHY
  • OUR CLERK'S AWESOME TEAM TRANSITIONED US TO A VIRTUAL MEETING PLATFORM ALMOST FLAWLESSLY I MIGHT ADD FOR ALL OUR COMMISSION MEETINGS JUST AS TODAY AND ENSURED THAT THE PUBLIC REMAIN ENGAGED AND ABLE TO PARTICIPATE FULLY

  • WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE IMMEDIATE FINANCIAL RELIEF TO OUR BUSINESS PARTNERS AND THE EMPLOYEES ESPECIALLY THE HARDEST HIT SUCH AS OUR AIRPORT AND DINING AND RETAIL TENANTS
  • THE PORT IMMEDIATELY REDUCED ITS SPENDING BY 20% AND WE PRIORITIZED MAINTAINING OUR CONSTRUCTION SPENDING BECAUSE OF HOW POWERFULLY IT IMPACTS THE REGION'S ECONOMY
  • AND BEST OF ALL, NO ONE WAS LAID OFF OR FURLOUGHED THIS YEAR
  • OUR CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS PROVIDE A MAJOR BOOST TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY AND WE RECOGNIZE HOW CRITICAL THESE INVESTMENTS ARE TO THE PEOPLE RIGHT NOW
  • TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA, CONSTRUCTION JOBS AT THE PORT SUPPORT 1,300 FULL AND PART TIME WORKERS ON AVERAGE PER MONTH AND WITH LIVING WAGES I MIGHT ADD
  • THE COMMISSION AGREED THAT WE SHOULD MOVE FORWARD WITH APPROXIMATELY 20 PROJECTS THAT ARE ALREADY UNDERWAY WORTH ABOUT 1.5 BILLION DOLLARS

  • WE ALSO BROUGHT UNDER INNOVATION MARITIME TOGETHER IN WAYS THAT WILL STRENGTHEN FUGIT SOUND AS A GLOBAL MARITIME HUB OF ACTIVITY AND COMMERCE
  • LOOKING TO THE FUTURE, THE PORT HAS PARTNERED WITH MARITIME BLUE

  • FOR ME SOME OF THE MOST DEEPLY MEANINGFUL WORK WE DID THIS YEAR WAS WORKING BOTTOM UP WITH THE PORT'S CHAPTER OF BLACK IN GOVERNMENT AND THE OFFICE OF EQUITY LED BY OUR GREAT CO CHAIRS DELMAS WHITAKER AND BOOKDA GHEISAR
  • WE STOOD UP THE PORT'S TASK FORCE ON POLICING AND CIVIL RIGHTS
  • LIKE MANY CITIES AROUND US, WE ARE RESPECTFULLY AND RESPONSIBLY ASSESSING OUR OWN PORT OF SEATTLE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THANK YOU INTERIM CHIEF VIA WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT THROUGH THE EXTRAORDINARY CONTINGENT OF KNOWLEDGE EXPERTS AND THE TASK FORCE AS WE ASSESS AND REVIEW OUR POLICING PRACTICES TO BRING THEM INTO THE FIRST CENTURY AND RESPONSIVE TO SOCIETAL NEEDS

  • I THINK EVERYONE'S SPIRITS GOT A NEEDED LIFT YESTERDAY WHEN WE SAW THE FRONTLINE HEALTHCARE WORKERS GET THE FIRST SHOTS OF THE COVID 19 VACCINE
  • IT CERTAINLY WAS A MILESTONE DAY FOR US HERE IN THE US
  • IT'S A HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT BUT WE KNOW THAT THE FULL RECOVERY WILL TAKE SOME TIME

  • HERE IN WASHINGTON WE EXPECT TO RECEIVE OVER 62,000 DOSES OF THE PFIZER VACCINE FOR OUR INITIAL ALLOCATION WITH AN ESTIMATED TOTAL OF AROUND 200,000 DOSES BY THE END OF DECEMBER

  • FOR EXAMPLE WE ADOPTED THE NEW WORKFORCE POLICY DIRECTIVE THAT EXPANDED THE DEFINITION OF WORKFORCE, ADDED GREEN JOBS AS A CAREER TRACK
  • ANOTHER STEP THAT REALLY WAS INSTRUMENTAL THIS YEAR IS THAT THE COMMISSION ADOPTED THE MOTION TO ADD ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FOR THE USE OF THE SOUTH KING COUNTY FUND WHICH MADE THIS FUND MUCH MORE RESPONSIVE AND RELEVANT AS OF USE TO OUR COMMUNITIES
  • THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE FUNDS FOR 2020 ARE ONE AND A HALF MILLION IN TOTAL
  • 1,000,000 WAS DESIGNATED FOR ECONOMIC RECOVERY, 250,000 DOLLARS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS, AND 250,000 DOLLARS FOR SUPPORT OF WOMEN AND MINORITY OWNED BUSINESSES THROUGH DAVE MACFADDEN'S OFFICE OFFERED TO ORGANIZATIONS THAT COULD BUILD THE CAPACITY OF WMBE'S
  • SOME OF THE NEXT STEPS OF WHAT WE'RE GOING TO BE UP TO THAT I WANT TO MENTION IS THAT IN JANUARY YOU WILL BE HEARING FROM ANDY ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS THAT WILL BE PROPOSING TO THE COMMISSION AND ASKING FOR YOUR APPROVAL

  • EIGHT TO 10 MEANING THEY WERE THE MOST VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES, MEANING THREATS TO CHRONIC CONDITIONS, ECONOMIC HARDSHIP, ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION, AND HISTORICAL RACISM THAT HAS HAPPENED SYSTEMATICALLY

  • IT'S ESPECIALLY NOTEWORTHY THAT WE HAVE ACTUALLY- IT'S A LITTLE SAD IN 2020 BUT IN 2018 IN 2019 THE YEARS THAT ARE COVERED BY THE SUPPORT WE HAVE A VERY ACTIVE CRUISE FACILITY WITH TWO BERTHS
  • WE ALSO HAVE ACTIVE FISHING FLEET, NUMEROUS OTHER INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES AND TENANTS GOING ON RIGHT BETWEEN TWO RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS AND IT ALL WORKS SMOOTHLY AND ISSUES ARE RESOLVED BECAUSE OF THIS LONG STANDING AGREEMENT AND THE WORK THAT THE PORT AND THE COMMUNITY DOES TOGETHER

  • INITIALLY IT WAS QUITE FRUSTRATING WHEN YOU GOT MUTED AND COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO UNMUTE OR YOU COULDN'T LOG ON OR ALL THESE DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS THAT WE WERE BEING FACED WITH AT DIFFERENT TIMES AND I THINK WE'VE OVERCOME SO MUCH THIS YEAR THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL OF REALLY INTERFERING WITH OUR ABILITY TO FUNCTION EFFECTIVELY AND TO INTERFERE WITH OUR COMMUNICATIONS AND I SAY HATS OFF TO OUR PORT COMMISSION OFFICE STAFF AND THAT INCLUDES BOTH OUR SPECIALISTS, OUR POLICY DIRECTOR AARON PRITCHARD, OUR NEW CHIEF OF STAFF WHO CAME ON BOARD EARLIER IN THE YEAR WHO HAD TO TAKE ON A LOT AND HAD TO ON BOARD PRETTY DARN QUICKLY, AND OF COURSE OUR CLERK STAFF
