  • THE COVID 19 SURGE IN POSITIVE CASES AND HOSPITALIZATIONS IN THE STATE OF WASHINGTON AND KING COUNTY, DRIVEN BY THE HOLLY INFECTIOUS OMICRON VARIANT, CONTINUES
  • THERE MAY BE GOOD NEWS ON THE HORIZON AS POSITIVE CASES IN THE STATE ARE BEGINNING TO PLATEAU AND KING COUNTY IS REPORTING A DOWNWARD TREND
  • WASHINGTON STATE IS REPORTING A SEVEN DAY CASE RATE OF 15,037 PER 100,000 POPULATION
  • KING COUNTY IS REPORTING A SEVEN DAY CASE RATE OF 1099 PER 100,000 POPULATION
  • THE PORT OF SEATTLE HAS ALSO EXPERIENCED A LARGE NUMBER OF POSITIVE COVID CASES WITHIN OUR CRITICAL WORKFORCE
  • SINCE JANUARY 1, 2022, 154 PORT EMPLOYEES HAVE TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE VIRUS
  • THIS NUMBER INCLUDES EMPLOYEES WORKING THE FRONT LINE, TELEWORKING AND THOSE ON PAID TIME OFF
  • WE'LL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE VIRAL ACTIVITY AND ASSESS OUR MITIGATION STRATEGIES TO PROTECT THE WORKFORCE, CUSTOMERS AND BUSINESS PARTNERS
  • AS PART OF OUR FURTHER MITIGATION EFFORTS, EFFECTIVE MARCH 7, THE PORT OF SEATTLE WILL REQUIRE CONTRACTORS AND CONSULTANTS WORKING IN MOST NON PUBLIC PORT FACILITIES TO BE FULLY VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19

  • THE OPPORTUNITY YOUTH INITIATIVE WAS LAUNCHED IN 2020 IN RESPONSE TO VERY HIGH RATES OF YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT ARISING OUT OF THE PANDEMIC RELATED ECONOMIC DOWNTURN, AS WELL AS HISTORICAL CHALLENGES OF POVERTY, HOMELESSNESS, AND DISCRIMINATION
  • WE CONTINUE THE PROGRAM IN 2021 TO ADDRESS THE ONGOING CHALLENGES FACING THE COMMUNITY
  • WHILE THE PANDEMIC CONTINUED TO CARRY OUT THESE PROGRAMS, FOUR CONTRACTS WERE EXECUTED WITH EXPERIENCED COMMUNITY AGENCIES, SEATTLE GOODWILL INDUSTRIES PARTNER AND EMPLOYMENT URBAN LEAGUE OF METROPOLITAN SEATTLE AND SEATTLE PARKS FOUNDATION

  • BY APRIL OF 2020, 16 TO 24 YEAR OLDS MADE UP THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS IN COMPARISON TO OTHER AGE GROUPS, THIS PACE WAS SUSTAINED THROUGH 2020
  • THIS IS ESPECIALLY SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE 16 TO 24 YEAR OLD POPULATIONS MAKE UP ONLY 12% OF THEIR WORKFORCE IN KING COUNTY, BUT UNEMPLOYMENT IN THAT GROUP KEPT RISING
  • ADDITIONALLY, WITHIN THIS 60 TO 24 YEAR OLD RANGE, WE KNOW THAT WORKERS OF COLOR, WORKERS WITH A HIGH SCHOOL DEGREE ARE EQUIVALENT, AND WORKERS IN SOUTH KING COUNTY HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THE GREATEST RATES OF UNEMPLOYMENT

  • AND IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS OF 2021, ANU WAS ABLE TO ASSIST 55 YOUTH WITH THIS FUNDING
  • 22% OF THESE YOUTH WERE FEMALES AND 78% WERE PEOPLE OF COLOR
  • SINCE OUR TRAINING, WE'VE PLACED OVER 60% OF THESE YOUTH IN APPRENTICESHIP OR FAMILY WAGE EMPLOYMENT AND CONTINUE TO PLACE GRADUATES WHO JUST FINISHED THE PROGRAM IN DECEMBER
  • THIS PROGRAM IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT, AND THE SIPHONED IS REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE A LOT OF OUR YOUTH WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PARTICIPATE AND TO GAIN ACCESS TO THESE FAMILY WAGE CAREERS
  • THESE APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES IF THE STIPENDS WERE NOT AVAILABLE TO THEM TO GO THROUGH THIS PROGRAM
