  • WE'VE EXPERIENCED AN UNTHINKABLE RISE IN ANTIASIAN DISCRIMINATION AND RACISM, INCLUDING PHYSICAL VIOLENCE, VERBAL ATTACKS, DISPROPORTIONATE ECONOMIC STRUGGLES IN THE COMMUNITY
  • IT'S WIDELY THOUGHT THAT COVET BROUGHT ALL OF THIS TO THE SURFACE, AND THE PORT HAS DONE MANY THINGS TO RESPOND, FROM MESSAGES OF SUPPORT TO OUR COMMUNITIES TO TRAINING AND EDUCATION FOR OUR WORKFORCE TO SOLIDARITY EVENTS ORGANIZED BY OUR EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUPS

  • OUR COMMUNITIES REPRESENT OVER 42 DIFFERENT NATIONS ACROSS THE WORLD, AND WE SPEAK OVER 100 LANGUAGES IN OVER 1000 DIFFERENT DIALECTS
  • AS A PORT COMMISSIONER, I'M ALSO MINDFUL THAT THE PORT OF SEATTLE ITSELF SERVES AS THE PRIMARY POINT OF ENTRY INTO OUR REGION FOR PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE WORLD AND THAT OUR TOP FIVE TRADE PARTNERS ARE BASED IN ASIA
  • IT IS EXACTLY OUR DIVERSITY THAT MAKES OUR ECONOMY RESILIENT AND MAKES OUR SOCIAL FABRIC STRONG
  • AND AS WE CELEBRATE AN AANHPI HERITAGE MONTH, WE CELEBRATE THE MANY CONTRIBUTIONS OF OUR COMMUNITIES TO THIS PORT, TO THIS REGION, AND TO OUR NATION

  • EXPERIENCE AS A JAPANESE AMERICAN, HAVING BEEN PROFILED IMPRISONED FOR HIS RACE AND aNCESTRY.HIS AND SO THE POINT I AM TRYING TO MAKE HERE IS THAT WE OFTEN SAY AS PEOPLE OF COLORS, AS LEADERS, THAT REPRESENTATION MATTERS
  • AND NORM MINETA IN HIS POSITION AS SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION WAS LITERALLY THE EMBODIMENT OF WHY REPRESENTATION MATTERS
  • OFTENTIMES I THINK TO MYSELF, IF IT WASN'T NORM AND IF IT WAS SOMEONE ELSE SITTING IN THAT SEAT IN THE SITUATION ROOM MAKING THOSE DECISIONS AT THE TABLE, HOW DIFFERENT THE POLICIES COMING OUT OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION COULD HAVE BEEN

  • AND I WAS A FRESH GRAD OUT OF GRAD SCHOOL WHEN I APPLIED FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP AND GOT MY START WORKING ON CAPITOL HILL IN WASHINGTON, DC
  • AND THAT'S ALL THANKS TO THE FACT THAT NORM WAS THE FOUNDER OF THE ORGANIZATION AND THE PROGRAM
  • AND SO I THINK IT'S SAFE TO SAY THAT I WOULD NOT BE SITTING HERE TODAY HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR NORM AND ALL THE WORK THAT HE HAS DONE

  • BUT ONE THING THAT I'VE ALWAYS APPRECIATED AND WILL EVER ALWAYS REMEMBER IS THAT HE WOULD HOST AN EVENT IN SEATTLE
  • I WENT THROUGH SEVERAL TIMES WITH SURVIVORS OF THE INTERNMENT CAMPS THERE
  • THERE ARE ALWAYS OLD WOMEN BECAUSE MOST OF THE GUYS HAD DIED BY THEN
  • BUT IT WAS JUST REMARKABLE TO SEE THE PROUDNESS OF THE INTEGRITY OF THESE ELDER WOMEN AND STANDING UP AND REPRESENTING ATROCITY THAT THEY WERE EXPOSED TO
  • AND ALSO KIND OF WAS A BONDING FEELING FOR ME AS BEING FROM RUSSIAN AND POLISH, RUSSIAN AND GERMAN JEWISH DESCENT
  • SO IT WAS A GREAT AFFINITY THAT I HAD PRESENTED IN A WAY FOR BOTH AYE
  • RELATIONSHIP WITH TRIBES AND WITH FOLKS THAT WERE UNJUSTLY DETAINED

  • IT CAN BE VERY INTIMIDATING
  • AND SO IT'S ALWAYS BEEN A VERY HIGH PRIORITY FOR ME TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE KNEW THAT THEY WERE WELCOMED

  • WE JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE A DIFFERENT KIND OF WORK
  • OUR WORK IS NO MORE, NO LESS STRESSFUL THAN MOST PEOPLE AROUND THE PORT

  • AND I REALLY TRIED TO HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT
  • AND SO IT'S REALLY BEEN TOUCHING FOR ME IS TO HEAR THAT FROM PEOPLE AND TO HEAR THE IMPACT I'VE HAD
  • THE LAST THING I WANT TO SAY IS, AND YOU ALL KNOW THIS, BUT THE PORT IS SUCH AN AMAZING PLACE TO WORK, AND YOU'VE HEARD IT IN THESE PRESENTATIONS TODAY, STARTING WITH THE CRUISE PRESENTATION AND ENDING WITH THIS LAST ONE IS KIND OF APPROPRIATE THAT I FOLLOWED THE ACE AND THE PORT BECAUSE THAT'S, I THINK A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THE MANY INSTANCES WHERE STAFF WHO HAVE THE BEST OF INTENTIONS AND THEIR HEARTS ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AND THEY'RE CONTINUALLY PUSHING TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT OR DO SOMETHING ADDITIONAL FOR THE COMMUNITY TO HELP YOU GET JOBS, TO GET SOME EXPERIENCE
  • AND AT THE OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUM, WE HAVE THE COMMISSIONERS WHO ARE ALWAYS PUSHING US TO EXECUTE ON NEW IDEAS AND CHALLENGING US TO TAKE OUR WORK IN PLACES THAT MAYBE WE HAVEN'T YET THOUGHT OF AND ASKING US THE WHAT IF QUESTION AND STAFF REALLY RISING TO THOSE OCCASIONS AND FIGURING THINGS OUT
  • AND SO IT'S SOMETHING THAT MAYBE IT'S NOT UNIQUE TO THE PORT, BUT IT'S PRETTY RARE
  • AND IT'S BEEN GREAT TO WORK FOR A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WHO ARE REALLY COMMITTED TO MAKING THINGS BETTER FOR OUR COMMUNITIES AND OUR ENVIRONMENT
