  • AND WHEREAS, A STUDY BY UCLA LAWS WILLIAMS INSTITUTE CITES 40% OF LGBTQIA TWO S PLUS ADULTS IDENTIFIED AS PEOPLE OF COLOR AND AN ESTIMATED 1.3 MILLION IMMIGRANT ADULTS AND ARE LGBTQIA TWO S PLUS, OF WHOM 23% ARE UNDOCUMENTED

  • FIRST, I WANT TO RECOGNIZE THAT JUNE IS A MONTH OF CELEBRATION
  • THAT OFTENTIMES
  • AS WE THINK ABOUT SOME OF THE ISSUES STILL FACING THE LGBTQ PLUS COMMUNITY, WE REALLY NEED TO FOCUS ON THE CONCERNS AROUND INCREASED BIGOTRY AND HOMOPHOBIA IN OUR SOCIETY AND THE EFFORTS BY CERTAIN FACTORS WITHIN SOCIETY TO LEGISLATE AWAY THE RIGHTS THAT WE'RE FINALLY HONORING IN MOST OF THE COUNTRY AND FIGHT AGAINST EFFORTS TO UNDO THAT
  • BUT I ALSO WANT TO RECOGNIZE WHAT AN INCREDIBLE CELEBRATION IT IS
  • AND I THINK THAT STEMS FROM THE VERY FACT THAT LOVE IS NOT A ZERO SUM GAME
  • THAT WHEN WE FINALLY ALLOW PEOPLE TO LOVE WHO THEY WANT TO LOVE, THAT THAT ACTUALLY BUILDS LOVE FOR ALL OF US, THAT IT DOESN'T TAKE AWAY FROM YOU IN ANY WAY
  • TO SEE PEOPLE WHO FOR DECADES, GENERATIONS, FOR REALLY THE HISTORY OF HUMANITY, HAVE BEEN PREVENTED FROM BEING ABLE TO HONOR THAT VERY BASIC THING
  • I WAS BORN THIS WAY
  • THIS IS WHO I WANT TO LOVE, AND I WANT TO BE ABLE TO SHARE THAT WITH THE OTHER PERSON WHO I TRULY LOVE AND KNOW THAT THAT DOESN'T TAKE AWAY FROM ME
  • SO THAT'S THE FIRST THING
  • THE SECOND THING IS I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE CELEBRATE THIS PUBLICLY AND OPENLY AND LOUDLY BECAUSE OF THE POINT THAT WAS MADE IN THE PROCLAMATION IS THAT THIS INTERSECTS WITH OTHER AREAS OF VULNERABILITY, WHETHER IT'S AS A FIRST GENERATION AMERICAN OR AS A PERSON OF COLOR OR FOR SOMETHING THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR ME, FOR YOUTH
  • THINK ABOUT FOR THOSE OF US WHO DID NOT HAVE TO DEAL WITH NON HETERONORMATIVE GENDER STEREOTYPES PLACED ON US WHEN WE WERE CHILDREN
  • THINK ABOUT WHAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE TO GO THROUGH MIDDLE SCHOOL WHERE WHO YOU WERE AS A PERSON WAS QUESTIONED ON A FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL
  • IT'S NO SURPRISE THAT THESE CHILDREN FACE SOME OF THE HIGHEST RATES OF SUICIDE, SOME OF THE HIGHEST RATES OF DEPRESSION
  • AND WHEN WE SAY IN THE MONTH OF JUNE, WE CELEBRATE WHO YOU ARE AS ADULTS, AS LEADERS IN OUR COMMUNITY, IT TELLS THOSE KIDS THAT THEY ARE WELCOME AND THAT THEY ARE LOVED
  • AND SO FOR ME, I WILL CONTINUE TO GO TO EVERY PRIDE PARADE I CAN GO TO
  • I WILL WEAR RAINBOWS THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF JUNE AND AROUND THE YEAR, WHENEVER I'M ASKED TO
  • I WANT TO DEMONSTRATE TO THOSE KIDS THAT THEY HAVE A STRONG ALLY IN ME AS AN INDIVIDUAL AND US AS LEADERS, AND ALSO AS THE INSTITUTION OF THE PORT, AND THAT WE'RE GOING TO MAKE THIS PLACE A PLACE THAT THEY FEEL SAFE AND THAT THEY KNOW THAT THEY'RE TRULY A PART OF THIS PLACE IN THIS REGION
  • SO I'M TRULY EXCITED TO SUPPORT THIS PROCLAMATION AND LOOK FORWARD TO THE SUPPORT OF MY FELLOW COMMISSIONERS

  • I WAS ALSO DELIGHTED THE FACT THAT THE SEATTLE AQUARIUM HAD A PRIDE NIGHT THAT I WAS HONORED AND ENJOYED VERY MUCH GOING OUT WITH OUR COMMISSIONER OFFICE PERSON, PRESTON TUCKER
  • AND IT WAS PARTICULARLY FUN BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO GIVE A TOUR OF THE AQUARIUM
  • BUT THE FACT THAT THE WHOLE AQUARIUM WAS A JOYOUS PLACE TO CELEBRATE PRIDE MONTH, I THOUGHT WAS SOMETHING GREAT
  • AND PART OF THE ONGOING EFFORTS THAT WE HAVE, PERHAPS IN OUR MOU WITH THE AQUARIUM COULD BE A JOINT EFFORT WITH A GREAT VENUE TO HAVE A PARTY AS WELL
