PORT OF SEATTLE MEMORANDUM COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 3a SPECIAL ORDER Date of Meeting April 28, 2015 DATE: April 21, 2015 TO: Ted Fick, Chief Executive Officer FROM: Elizabeth Leavitt, Director Aviation Planning & Environmental Services; Leslie Stanton, Environmental Strategy Manager SUBJECT: Special Order of Business Recognize the 2014 Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Green Gateway Environmental Excellence Award Winner BACKGROUND In honor of Earth Day (April 22, 2015) Airport staff would like to recognize the winner of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport's Green Gateway Environmental Excellence Award. The Awards Program annually recognizes Airport tenants, airlines, and business partners for outstanding environmental leadership and encourages continuous environmental improvement by celebrating their accomplishments and acknowledging the critical role they play in assisting the Port in meeting its environmental goals. Since 2010, the Port of Seattle has recognized seven individual airlines, tenants, and business partners with eleven awards for outstanding environmental accomplishments at the Airport. Some past award winners include HMSHost, Alaska Airlines, FedEx, and Keeney's Office Supply. This year, Airport staff recognizes a repeat winner for recent actions that clearly demonstrate an ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship. 2014 AWARD WINNER HMSHost (Environmental Performance). Airport staff recommends an award for HMSHost's waste reduction and energy conservation accomplishments. These projects demonstrate continuous support for Airport waste minimization and energy conservation objectives. HMSHost: Replaced disposable wiping towels with laundry service in their Airport restaurants for an estimated reduction of 15,000 lbs. of disposable waste in 2014 and 30,000 lbs. per year thereafter; Replaced 811 incandescent lights with LEDs in their Airport stores for estimated annual savings of 34,355 watts and $18,967, in addition to reducing waste from purchasing and replacing fewer lights; COMMISSION AGENDA Ted Fick, Chief Executive Officer April 21, 2015 Page 2 of 3 Installed two Energy Star-rated deep fryers at Anthony's restaurant for an estimated annual savings of $8,000. HMSHost received $3,750 in rebates from Puget Sound Energy for installing the fryers. These fryers also extend cooking oil life thus reducing oil replacement and associated packaging; Led all participants in the Airport's food bank donation program for the third year in a row by donating 20,106 lbs. of food, which translates into approximately 309 meals each week and represents 61% of all 2014 donations; Replaced 75,000 disposable service ware items (plates/bowls/to-go containers) with compostable products at their Wolfgang Puck restaurant. Because the franchise mandated this conversion, the panel considered this an involuntary action and excluded it from their award evaluation. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND Airport staff created the Awards Program in 2010 such that one or more awards may be given each year, depending on the quality and quantity of nominations received. The Airport accepts nominations for any project, process, or action that promotes environmental leadership and stewardship in one of three categories: Environmental Performance Environmental Education and Outreach Environmental Innovation Between December 2014 and January 2015, the Airport accepted award nominations for projects, processes, or actions completed during 2014. Four nominations were received from three nominees in the Environmental Performance categoryand one in the Education and Outreach category. A panel of Aviation Division staff from multiple departments reviewed the nominations in accordance with criteria established for each category, and recommended the winner to Airport senior management. Senior management concurred with the panel's recommendation to award a single 2014 Environmental Excellence Award. Port staff notified the 2014 Award Winner on March 31, 2015. NEXT STEPS Port of Seattle Commissioners will have the opportunity to present commemorative plaques to award winners during the April 28, 2015, Commission meeting. Port staff will also acknowledge Environmental Excellence Award Winners on banners located inside the Airport terminal, in a press release to local media and the public, and through other media outlets.
