PORT OF SEATTLE MEMORANDUM COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 3a SPECIAL ORDER Date of Meeting April 22, 2014 DATE: April 4, 2014 TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer FROM: Elizabeth Leavitt, Director Aviation Planning & Environmental Services Leslie Stanton, Environmental Strategy Manager SUBJECT: Special Order of Business Recognize Winners of the 2013 Seattle- Tacoma International Airport Green Gateway Environmental Excellence Awards BACKGROUND In honor of Earth Day, staff would like to recognize winners of the 2013 Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Green Gateway Environmental Excellence Award Program ("Awards Program"). The Awards Program annually recognizes Airport tenants, airlines, and business partners for outstanding environmental leadership, and encourages continuous improvement by celebrating their accomplishments and acknowledging the critical role they play in assisting the Port in meeting its environmental goals. 2013 AWARD WINNERS Alaska Airlines Group (Environmental Innovation/Performance Category). Receiving recognition for their leadership in the Greener Skies Initiative, and transition to Electric Ground Support Equipment. o Greener Skies Initiative: Alaska Airlines Group (AAG) partnered with the Port of Seattle, Boeing, and the Federal Aviation Administration to develop this revolutionary new method for aircraft descent approach. Using modern GPS- based technologies and computer-generated flight paths, aircraft following the Greener Skies procedures fly shorter, continuous descent approaches that save fuel, increase safety and predictability, decrease emissions, and reduce noise. These new procedures became operational in March 2013. Benefits of this initiative include: o Saving more than 2 million gallons of fuel annually for all properly equipped airlines (not just Alaska). o Reducing approximately 22,400 metric tons of CO2, and o Reducing noise exposure for approximately 750,000 people in the Puget Sound Region. Template revised May 30, 2013. COMMISSION AGENDA Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer April 4, 2014 Page 2 of 3 o Electric Ground Support Equipment (EGSE): A laska Airlines partnered with the Port of Seattle and Western Washington Clean Cities to replace fossil-fueled GSE with electric GSE. In 2013, AAG purchased 204 electric ground vehicles and the Port constructed 270 electric vehicle charging stations, including upgrades to electrical infrastructure at C and D concourses, and the North Satellite. AAG's ground fleet is now 45% electric vehicles with more to come. Alaska's conversion alone of 146 vehicles from fossil-fuel to electric is the equivalent of taking 360 passenger vehicles off the road for a year, or a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 1,900 tons per year. o Though not specifically recognized in this award, AAG also made strides in reducing waste through in-flight recycling actions, and reducing fossil fuel use through solar-powered boarding ramps. Dufry AG/The Hudson Group (Environmental Performance Category). Receiving recognition for installation of energy efficient lighting in airport stores. o In 2013, Dufry AG/The Hudson Group installed low-energy-consuming light fixtures and 100% LED bulbs during renovations at three Duty Free stores and the Hudson Group's Flagship store (first official concept store) in the Airport's Central Terminal. Dufry estimates annual energy conservation and cost savings from all stores is 52,873 kilowatt hours and $5,287, respectively. Dufry estimates the South Satellite Duty Free store is 50% brighter with the new lighting, which improves sales performance while using less energy. HMSHost (Environmental Performance). Receiving recognition for outstanding performance in the Airport Food Bank Donation Program, and waste reduction in casual dining restaurants. o Food Bank Donations: HMSHost led all participants in the Airport's 2013 Food Bank Donation program for the second year in a row by donating 21,790 lbs. That amount equates to 335 meals per week and 62% of the 35,347 lbs. donated by all participants during 2013. HMSHost's 2013 donation total represents a 26% increase over their 2012 donations. Their outstanding performance helped the Airport achieve our highest annual food bank donation total of 122,000 lbs. since program inception in 2006. o Waste reduction in casual dining restaurants: In 2013, HMSHost replaced disposable food service ware items with durable alternatives. Specific examples of these waste reduction actions include: COMMISSION AGENDA Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer April 4, 2014 Page 3 of 3 o Replaced an estimated 230,000 styrofoam plates/bowls with washable bamboo at Alaska Lodge, Vintage Washington, Seattle Taproom, Casa Del Agave, and Seahawks Club 12. o Replaced an estimated 55,000 disposable napkins and 100,000 disposable plastic cutlery utensils with linen napkins and silverware. o Replaced 100 cases of disposable plastic cups with glass alternatives. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND The Awards Program was created in 2010 and is designed such that the Airport may present one or more awards each year, depending on the quality and quantity of nominations received. Nominations are accepted for any project, process, or action that promotes environmental leadership and stewardship in one of three categories: Environmental Performance Environmental Education and Outreach Environmental Innovation Between December 2013 and January 2014, the Airport accepted award nominations for projects, processes, or actions completed during 2013. Seven nominations were received from five nominees in the Environmental Performance category. A panel of Aviation Division staff reviewed those nominations, in accordance with criteria established for each category, and recommended winners to Airport Senior Management. Senior management concurred with panel recommendations that three nominations would receive 2013 Environmental Excellence Awards. Port staff notified winners of 2013 awards on March 27, 2014. Awards in the Environmental Education categories will not be presented this year, but all three categories will again be considered next year. NEXT STEPS Port of Seattle Commissioners will present commemorative awards to winners during the April 22, 2014, Commission meeting. The Port will also acknowledge Environmental Excellence Award Winners on graphic banners located inside the Airport terminal, in a press release to local media and the public, and through other media outlets.
