PORT OF SEATTLE MEMORANDUM COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 4c SPECIAL ORDER Date of Meeting January 7, 2014 DATE: December 31, 2013 TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer FROM: Patricia Akiyama, Director, Public Affairs SUBJECT: Special Order of Business Port of Seattle Awards Received in 2013 BACKGROUND The Port of Seattle had a very productive year in 2013, as evidenced by several major awards received in recognition of achievements in a number of areas. Particularly noteworthy were the awards for the port's environmental leadership,cruise and airport visitor experiences and financial reporting. In all, the port received 14 awards. Below is a brief summary of awards that deserve special attention, and a comprehensive list. German Cruising Guide Names Seattle "Port of the Year" Koehler's Cruise Guide, Germany's most recognized observer of the cruise industry, named Seattle as "Port of the Year" for 2014, citing the port's environmental initiatives and cruise customer experience as world-class. "The Port of Seattle is dedicated to continuous reductions in maritime-related emissions," said Koehler's. "Being a pioneer in shore power for the cruise industry, the U.S. gateway to Alaska offers perfect logistics, as well as passenger friendly downtown locations." 'Best Arrivals Experience' Award for Sea-Tac Airport Seattle-Tacoma International Airport's Experience the City of Music program was honored as Best Arrivals Experience at the Future Travel Experience Awards ceremony. The honor recognized Sea-Tac's music program "which goes the extra mile to provide a warm welcome and ensure the airport reflects the destination itself." GFOA Distinguished Budget Award The port received the Government Finance Officers Association's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for our 2013 budget document. This marks the sixth consecutive year that the port has received this award, the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting. As stated in GFOA's award letter, the award "represents a significant achievement by the entity. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting." Template revised May 30, 2013. COMMISSION AGENDA Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer December 30, 2013 Page 2 of 4 GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting and Award of Financial Reporting Achievement The Port of Seattle received, for its 2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), the "Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting" from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada. Along with this prestigious award, the Accounting & Financial Reporting Department received the GFOA "Award of Financial Reporting Achievement." As stated in the GFOA award notification, this certification "is the highest form of recognition in the area of government accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management." We are honored to receive this prestigious GFOA certification and award, which is now the eighth consecutive year that the port and AFR has earned this recognition. APEX Award for Publication Excellence The Port of Seattle Environmental Report for 2011-12 received the APEX Award for Publication Excellence in the category of Green Annual Report-2013. The awards were based on excellence in editorial content, graphic design and the success of the entry in achieving communications effectiveness and excellence. "Best Workplace for Waste Prevention and Recycling" Award Seattle-Tacoma International Airport received recognition for the seventh consecutive year as part of the annual Best Workplaces for Waste Prevention and Recycling, awarded by King County's Solid Waste Division. In collaboration with airport concessions, airport tenants and passengers, the airport recycled more than 1,800 tons of material in 2012 alone, including mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum cans and plastic, organic waste, cooking oil processed into Biodiesel and 25,000 pounds of unsold food distributed to local food banks. Estimated savings totaling $306,943, including $274,481 in avoided landfill disposal fees and $32,320 in recycling rebates. American Lung Association "Breathe Easy Champion Award" The American Lung Association Mountain Pacific presented the port with its "Breathe Easy Champion Award." The award recognizes the port's strong commitment to protect the environment and public health in the Puget Sound area. COMMISSION AGENDA Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer December 30, 2013 Page 3 of 4 Skytrax "Best Airport Staff" Award Congressman Adam Smith acknowledged the Sea-Tac Airport staff for being presented with the Skytrax Award which recognized the Sea-Tac staff as the best in North America. Salmon Safe Award Marine Maintenance received its second Salmon-Safe Award in 2013. This award recognizes the work Marine Maintenance does in the parks and landscape areas, and also includes the commitment the port demonstrates with storm water management and other environmental programs. 2012 Port of Seattle Firefighter of the Year Dale Hornung was honored as the Port of Seattle Firefighter of the Year for 2012. Selected by a department-wide vote, Hornung has served the department for 26 years. "Firefighter Hornung has all of thebest qualities we hope for in a firefighter a skilled professional, leader and team player who cares about his colleagues and community both inside and outside the fire house," said Port of Seattle Fire Chief Randy Krause. 2013 Police Officer of the Year Trevor Freutel was honored as the Port of Seattle Police Officer of the Year for 2013. This award recognizes members who demonstrate exceptional achievement, the highest standards of competence and professionalism, and a genuine commitment to their profession, the department and the public they serve. Prior to joining the port, he served as a U.S. Navy corpsman with the U.S. Marine Corps and as a military instructor at the Naval School of Health Sciences in Portsmouth, VA. 2013 Charles Blood Champion of Diversity Firefighter Dale Hornung is the 2013 award recipient. The Port Commission established the Charles Blood Champion of Diversity Award in 2000. Named for a leader who was devoted to issues of inclusion throughout his tenure of more than thirty years with the port, the award is given annually to a current employee who embodies the port's diversity commitment and values. 2013 Small Business Champion Award The Office of Social Responsibility celebrates the successes of the small business program, and in 2013 the port celebrated its third Small Business Champions Awards. These awards recognize a port employee or team who has championed increased small business participation at the port, and a small business from the port's roster that provided outstanding goods or services. This year's recipient was the Marine COMMISSION AGENDA Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer December 30, 2013 Page 4 of 4 Maintenance Purchasing Team; Tanaya Meagher, Lisa Phair, Shawn Shinkle and Garrett Terwilliger. 2013 Northwest Minority Supplier Development Council Champion Award The NWMSDC selected Tina Boyd, small business analyst in the Office of Social Responsibility as the 2013 Champion Award recipient.
