SUBJECT:  Appointment of New Members to the Art Oversight Committee 

ACTION REQUESTED: 
Request Commission ratification of the appointment of two new external members of the Port's
Art Oversight Committee, Carolyn Law as "visual artist" and Laura Haddad as "representative of
the community at large," in accordance with the Port's Art Program Policy and Guidelines. 
SYNOPSIS: 
The purpose of the Art Oversight Committee (AOC) is to provide guidance, leadership, and
support to the Port of Seattle in its policy to obtain and incorporate into Port projects highquality
, contemporary art that engages and reflects the Northwest culture and environment as
experienced by diverse cultures. The AOC provides consistent oversight and policy guidance to
the art program at all Port-owned facilities. 
BACKGROUND: 
There are up to eight members of the AOC, including a Port Commissioner, up to three Port staff
members, and five external representatives from the art and architecture community. External
members on the AOC serve one three-year term. They are eligible for re-appointment for a
second three-year term. Only two members can be rotated off the committee in any one year.
Currently, there are two vacancies on the AOC. 
The specific requirements and procedures for AOC membership are outlined in the Port of
Seattle Art Program Policy and Guidelines, which were approved by the Commission on
December 15, 2009 and are as follows:
AOC MEMBERSHIP: 
The AOC is to be comprised of up to eight members, five appointed by the Port Commission and
three appointed by the Chief Executive Officer. 
Appointments to AOC by the Port Commission: 
1.  Port Commission President (or a Commissioner appointed by the Commission
President).

2.  Representative of the regional visual arts community. 
3.  Visual artist. 
4.  Visual art curator. 
5.  Architect familiar with the Port's design vision and standards. 
6.  A member of the community at large. 
Appointments to AOC by the Chief Executive Officer: 
1.  Seaport Managing Director or designee. 
2.  Real Estate Managing Director or designee. 
3.  Airport Managing Director or designee.
EXTERNAL AOC MEMBERSHIP PROCEDURES: 
Persons wishing to be considered for AOC membership: 
May submit a Letter of Interest and resume to the Port; 
May be nominated by citizens of the region; or 
May be nominated by current and past members of the AOC. 
Current AOC members will review applications, conduct interviews with applicants as necessary 
and forward recommendations to the POS Commission. 
CONFLICT OF INTEREST:
The following individuals may not apply for artwork commissions: Employees of the Port of
Seattle, the project architect and/or other project personnel, Port of Seattle commissioners,
members of the art selection panel, members of the AOC, and the immediate family members
and business partners of all of the above. 
Following these procedures, the names of individuals who met the identified criteria were sent to
the AOC for review. After reviewing the applications, the AOC recommends for Commission
approval two extremely well-qualified applicants to fill the vacant positions on the committee.
Carolyn Law, to fill the position of "visual artist" vacated by Jack Mackie in 2012: 
Laura Haddad to fill the position of "representative of the community at large."

On June 2, 2009, the Commission ratified the appointment of two new external members of the
Port's Art Oversight Committee, Cheryl dos Remedios as "visual art curator," and Genevieve
Tremblay as "representative of the regional visual arts community." 
On August 26, 2008, the Commission approved revised Art Program Policy and Guidelines. 
On July 8, 2008, the Commission was briefed on proposed revisions to the Art Program Policy
and Guidelines. 
On September 6, 2007, the Commission was briefed on the Art Program, the Art Program
Guidelines, the One Percent for Art (OPA) Procedure, and the status of the Phase 1 Art Pool.

Limitations of Translatable Documents

PDF files are created with text and images are placed at an exact position on a page of a fixed size.
Web pages are fluid in nature, and the exact positioning of PDF text creates presentation problems.
PDFs that are full page graphics, or scanned pages are generally unable to be made accessible, In these cases, viewing whatever plain text could be extracted is the only alternative.
