PORT OF SEATTLE
MEMORANDUM
COMMISSION AGENDA Item No. 4b
Date of Meeting April 24, 2012

DATE: April 2, 2012
TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer
FROM: Janice Gedlund, Air Quality Program Manager
SUBJECT: Special Order of Business Green Gateway Partner Awards 2011
In honor of Earth Day, we would like to highlight the recent announcement of the second annual
Green Gateway Partner Awards, which recognize the comprehensive environmental
achievements of the Port's cruise and container ship operators. Green Gateway Partners
exemplify the Port's goal of being the cleanest, greenest, andmost energy-efficient port in the
nation.
The name of the awards Green Gateway Partners complements the Port of Seattle's role as
the Green Gateway for maritime trade between Asia and the Midwest. A study released in 2009
and updated in 2011 showed that for cargo originating in much of Asia and bound for a wide
range of destinations across the United States, routes through Seattle resulted in lower carbon
emissions than other routes.
The Green Gateway Partners Awards for our ocean-going vessels set as a minimum requirement
participation in the Port's At-Berth Clean Fuels program or use of shorepowertwo actions that
protect air quality in the region. In addition to using cleaner fuels or shorepower, Green
Gateway Partners must also exceed existing environmental regulations and industry standards in
several categories, such as the following: treatment and handling of wastewater and grey water,
use of environmentally preferable products, and waste minimization and recycling practices.
These and other environmental criteria are assigned point values. Depending on the number of
points earned, Green Gateway Partners can achieve one of three recognition levels: gold, silver
or bronze. The application review and scoring system were done by a third party, EA
Engineering, Science and Technology, Inc.
This year, we had nine winners, up from six the previous year. The 2011 award winners are:
Gold Partners: APL Ltd., Celebrity Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd, Norwegian Cruise Line,
Maersk Line, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line
Silver Partners: Holland America Line and Matson Navigation
Bronze Partner: COSCO Container Lines Americas Inc.

Winners were honored at a reception on February 16, 2012. Each company received a Green
Gateway Flag and a commemorative plaque in recognition of their award and honoring their
organization's commitment to environmental stewardship.
Along with our third-party consultant, we are in the process of developing updated criteria for
the 2012 Green Gateway Partner Awards program for container and cruise lines. We are also
evaluating options for broadening the award program in 2013 to other categories of Green
Gateway Partners. The evolution and expansion of the Green Gateway Awards program is one
strategy to implement the Century Agenda's goals of environmental sustainability.
