PORT OF SEATTLE
MEMORANDUM
COMMISSION AGENDA
STAFF BRIEFING Item No. 9c
Date of Meeting March 13, 2012
DATE: March 5, 2012
TO: Tay Yoshitani, Chief Executive Officer
FROM: Mike Merritt, Manager, Puget Sound/State Government Relations
Geraldine Poor, Manager, Regional Transportation
SUBJECT: Port of Seattle Regional Transportation - Commission Discussion

Over the past two decades, the Port of Seattle has engaged in many successful transportation
partnerships with local communities, and our state and federal governments, to improve capacity,
safety and efficiency of the region's transportation system.
A robust transportation system is vital to the Port's regional, national and international business
partners. Seattle's growth as a leading international gateway depends on efficient movement of
people and goods on our streets, highways and railways, as congestion drives up costs and limits
business growth. Communities throughout the state depend on the Port for transportation of
exports to markets around the world. The Century Agenda strategic planning emphasizes the
importance of an efficient transportation system to achieve regional economic growth.
Without system capacity and efficient access, the region risks losing jobs and economic
opportunity to ports making focused investments in highway and rail improvements.

BRIEFING OUTLINE:
At today's briefing, Port staff will present an overview of regional transportation investments and
partnerships. The Commission will discuss the Port's priority for regional transportation and the need
for investments to support our seaport, airport and real estate operations.
