Study Tours: What We Learned

Fannie Lou Hamer High School
Place- and project-based learning centered on community problems of practice in
the poorest congressional district in the country
Students participate in internships up to two full days a week
Extensive partnerships, including with Rocking the Boat

Rocking the Boat Kids don't just build boats, boats build kids!
Youth development through wooden boatbuilding, environmental science, and sailing
in the South Bronx

Bronx River Alliance
Restoring the Bronx
River corridor into a
healthy ecological,
recreational,
educational, and
economic resource for
the communities
through which the river
flows
Similar to the
Duwamish River
corridor, where the Port
has made a similar
commitment

Northwest Maritime Center and Skills Center
A community-based and regionally-oriented organization dedicated to experiential
education that opened a Maritime Skills Center program this past fall

Port Townsend School District
The first place-based maritime K-12 educational system in the nation with a curriculum
aligned with experiences in the local maritime community

What We Learned
Design: By the community, industry, trades and
students
Location: On or near the water and public transit
Size: Small (400-500) so that every student is
known by name, strength and need
Enrollment: Equitable percentages of students
of color, students with limited access to
resources, and girls
Staffing: Principal and teacher diversity should
reflect the intended student population

What We Recommend
Community Engagement: No decision
about us, without us
Location: On the Duwamish Waterway,
which provides ample access to water
Equity: Industry constitutes a significant
source of the region's employment, yet a
small percentage of those who live there
are employed there
Enrollment: Representative of the
students in South King County - selected
by lottery
Educational Model: A regional magnet,
400-500 students
District: To be determined

What We Recommend
Career Connected: Project- and place-based
learning aligned with state and industry
certification standards
Academics: Robust CTE pathways strongly
connected to maritime and ocean science jobs
Community: The interconnected nature of
social equity, economic viability, and
environmental protection, nested within the
region's social fabric, will help partners pursue
social justice and ensure community resilience

What We Recommend
Apprenticeship Opportunities: Employer-
and union-based internships will help
students receive high school, industry and
college credit (T|2|4)
A Partnership Coordinator: To connect
students with internships and foster
relationships with employers
Prosperity of Place: The interconnected
nature of social equity, economic viability,
and environmental protection will be nested
within the region's social fabric and
environmental security as partners purse
social justice and community resilience

Public-Private Partnerships
Prioritize innovation, collaboration
and a consortium of support
This group will work with school
district leaders to establish a variety
of support mechanisms for the
curriculum, program and eventually,
facilities

Limitations of Translatable Documents

PDF files are created with text and images are placed at an exact position on a page of a fixed size.
Web pages are fluid in nature, and the exact positioning of PDF text creates presentation problems.
PDFs that are full page graphics, or scanned pages are generally unable to be made accessible, In these cases, viewing whatever plain text could be extracted is the only alternative.
