  • AND THEN FINALLY, WITH ONE CRUISE LINE, WE HAVE A LEASE, WHICH IS RIGHT NOW IN PLACE UNTIL 2030
  • AND WE WERE ABLE TO PUT EVEN MORE MEASURES IN PLACE, STARTING FROM TARIFFS THROUGH GOING DOWN TO LEASES, WE GET PROGRESSIVELY MORE BOTH COMMITMENT AS WELL AS ABILITY TO IMPLEMENT DIFFERENT MEASURES

  • DURING THE PANDEMIC, WE CONDUCTED A STUDY CALLED THE EQUITABLE ECONOMIC CRUISE INVESTMENTS, LOOKING GLOBALLY AT WHAT PORTS AROUND THE WORLD ARE DOING IN TERMS OF EQUITY, TO SEE WHERE WE COULD LEARN AND WHAT WE SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTING HERE

  • I'VE HAD LOTS OF CONVERSATIONS WITH PEOPLE ON THIS ISSUE, CONSTITUENTS, SCIENTISTS, STAFF, PEOPLE, OTHERS WHO I BELIEVE ARE ALL COMING TO THE TABLE IN GOOD FAITH AND SEEKING, IN A LOT OF CASES, A SHARED END, WHICH IS HOW DO WE ADDRESS CLIMATE CHANGE AS IT PERTAINS TO MARITIME OPERATIONS? AND SO FOR ME, WHEN I LOOK AT THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE AROUND CRUISE, I HAVE TO ASK MYSELF, IF WE STEP BACK FROM THE TABLE, WILL WE BE ABLE TO DO BIG THINGS AROUND IT? AND I DON'T THINK WE CAN
  • AND FURTHERMORE, CRUISE REPRESENTS FOR US AT THE PORT OF SEATTLE AND SEAPORT ALLIANCE, NOT 68% OF OUR TOTAL EMISSIONS, BUT 18% OF OUR TOTAL EMISSIONS
  • THE REAL ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM FOR US AT THE PORT OF SEATTLE AND SEAPORT ALLIANCE IS THE WHOLE PORTFOLIO OF MARITIME OPERATIONS, THE OCEAN GOING VESSELS, SOME OF WHICH ARE CRUISE SHIPS, BUT MOST OF WHICH ARE LARGE CARGO SHIPS, THE SHIPS THAT MANAGE THOSE LARGE CARGO SHIPS, LIKE OUR TUG AND TOW BOAT OPERATORS AND CRUISES, A BIG PART OF THAT, BUT IT'S 18% IT IS ALSO AN AREA WHERE WE HAVE UNDUE INFLUENCE
  • IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT WE'RE NOT REGULATORS, WE DO SIT IN A VERY STRONG POSITION TO BE SERIOUS ABOUT HOW WE ADDRESS THE IMPACTS OF CREWS ON OUR ENVIRONMENT AND ON SOCIAL QUESTIONS IN OUR COMMUNITY
  • AND THE MOMENT WE SAY WE'RE NO LONGER GOING TO PARTICIPATE IN THAT, WE SEED OUR ABILITY TO HAVE ANY INFLUENCE OVER THAT
  • AND I AGREE WITH THE ASSESSMENT THAT IT WON'T GO AWAY, IT'LL GO ELSEWHERE, AND IT WILL LIKELY GO TO A PLACE THAT IS LESS INTERESTED IN THE TYPES OF SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES

  • IT IS THAT'S THE ONE THAT BY 2050, WE HAVE STATED PUBLICLY THAT WE WILL RUN THE PORT WITH ZERO EMISSIONS, CRUISE SHIPS, ZERO EMISSION GROUND TRANSPORTATION, ZERO EMISSION CRUISE TERMINAL OPERATIONS THAT WILL PROTECT WATER QUALITY AND MARINE ECOSYSTEMS, THAT WE WILL ENGAGE IN WITH OUR COMMUNITY AND DO REPORTING, AND THAT WE WILL SEEK IMPROVEMENTS IN ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND WASTE REDUCTION

  • THAT IS A REAL TARGET THAT WE'VE NOW SET IN 2050

  • AND SO A BIG QUESTION FOR ME AND A PROPOSAL THAT I WOULD MAKE TO THE FELLOW COMMISSIONERS IS THAT WE TAKE THAT 2050 TARGET DATE TO OUR SEC COMMITTEE TO WORKSHOP IT AND COME BACK AND TURN IT INTO A RESOLUTION THAT WE MAKE A PUBLIC VOTE ON THAT VERY GOAL, BECAUSE THAT'S NEW
  • AND I THINK IT STEMS FROM OUR AUGUST 2021 MEETING IN WHICH DURING OTHER BUSINESS, I ASKED US TO PUT A DATE ON WHEN WE WILL GET TO ZERO EMISSIONS CRUISE
  • BUT YOU GUYS WENT A STEP FURTHER AND ADDED A BUNCH OF OTHER THINGS THAT I THINK ARE ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR US TO ACHIEVE THAT
  • AND SO I APPLAUD THAT
  • I THINK ANOTHER HEADLINE IS OUR REVIEW OF THE CLI-BANK DECLARATION SAYING, CAN WE BE THE NORTH AMERICAN PORT THAT TAKES THAT AND APPLIES IT TO OUR CRUISE OPERATIONS? AND BY EXTENSION, IF WE CAN SOLVE IT WITH OUR CRUISE OPERATIONS, CAN WE THEN EXTEND IT TO THE BIGGER PIECE, WHICH IS THE INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC CARGO SHIPPING? THAT I THINK IS THE REAL GOAL FOR ME IS WE TAKE AN INDUSTRY WHERE WE HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE LEVERAGE AND WE USE THAT TO FIND HOW TO DO THE LARGER QUESTION, WHICH IS TO NOT ONLY BE ZERO EMISSIONS IN CRUISE, BUT TO BE ZERO EMISSIONS IN CARGO SHIPPING AS WELL
